Okay, scrap what I was going to do today, now going to play with LAB mode! (And watch your other videos on it.) Love the clarity of explanation and the pace of delivery - never rushed, never too much unnecessary information. 👍

I am a Lab addict, and have never seen this technique. You have just earned a like and subscribed from me. Would love to see videos on how to fine tune various Lab colors using very central area of the a and b curves. Found your LAB Mode Tutorial about a year ago and it means so much more now that I have a larger knowledge base.

OMG, I forgot about LAB. I was taught to use it a few years ago until I started using Ben Wilmore's method of just using curves and the input/output numbers. As always Colin, Awesome tutorial. BTW, great strumming, sounds a lot like my brother's guitar playing. Sweet.

This was really useful, thanks for taking the time to show us how to do this. No, I've never used LAB mode like that before, so I certainly appreciated you explaining this method. About colour combinations I quite like vivid blue (like in this lady's dress) and brown together. I enjoy the videos on your channel, great work and warm enthusiasm. :)

Regarding your question about LAB color use, I’ve used it in the past after watching Dave Margolis do a demo at Photoshop World a very long time ago and then played with it some using Kelby’s 7-Point System in CS 5 or 6. Sometimes it worked pretty well but I’ve never understood how it works. This tutorial gave me a bit more of a clue, thanks Colin.

I did watch a tutorial a while back but didn't take the time to understand what was going on. Now I may just watch this again and give it a try as it looks a better way to change color than trying with HSL Thanks for posting this tutorial.

Took a couple of views maybe 3. I'm getting OLD & these things take a while to penetrate but I jumped in & had a try. Result posted on the facebook group & I'm happy how it turned out, so once again Thank You. You have proven once again you can teach 'Old Dogs' new tricks.

I think there was 1 other thing that should be said. Instead of just merging the image and curves layer would it not be better to convert the 2 layers as a smart object, so that should you latter change your mind on the colors used it could be done without the need to start from scratch.

Unfortunately, it does not work for me. Simply, PS does not let me overwrite the output point... Is it a bug or I do something wrong?

Dunno if you'll see after all this time, but here goes: I'm retouching artwork rather than photos, and trying to change something to yellow, but parts of it come out greenish rather than what I think they should be (warmer and closer to red or orange). Am I doing something wrong or assuming this process can do something it can't?

I was using this tutorial to match colors. It was working perfectly but now every time I try to change the output color in the curve section the output box remains blank. If I click on that box to try and enter a number in it both input and output boxes disappear. I'm not sure what I did. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this?

I'm still trying to figure this out. To 'set' the blue color, you click on the yellow? LOL I know there is a reason for this, as well as a reason where you put the Curves layer. Why? I'm a little ditzy and this doesn't make sense yet. LOL My experience with LAB color mode is for similar uses. Thank you!
@photoshopcafe

lol, you click on the blue to get the blue code, then you click on yellow and change it to match :)

I tried copying the tone of one face to another face. I'm positive I did everything right, but the tone of the 2nd face is too red. Not convinced this is as great a tool as portrayed.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier if you double click the mid-tone (target color set) and set the target color to your desired color?

thanks a lot. tho i missed up a little i know the general idea. and i'm sure that next time i can do better. my mistake was simple, some small spots on the dress (my image, its random i got from google images) and the hair. really the reason why i made such mistake is wanted to "test" how it works so i intentionally didn't make it look perfect. forgot to say, the image that i wanted to sample the color of was a blue dress. from a dark brown dress to a blue dress and it almost worked. thanks again

I respectfully disagree with those who said that this is a great video. I have tried to follow it. I have tried to transpose a step by step into a Word document. There is always a step that is left out in the explanation. I wind up changing the colors of parts of the image that I do not wish to change. Colin, do you test out your videos to see that they can be followed before putting them on KZbin? I am frustrated because I really wanted to learn this technique. I am willing to send you the Word document that I have created. By the way, when the video opens, Layer 1 has a mask. I do not see where you have instructed to create any type of mask. That is what I am talking about. There is always a forgotten step. Thank you.

Thanks Colin, but for me, a very rare Photoshop user, this is just too complicated, I`d never heard of Lab before watching this video. I watched the other video you recently put out on colour changing the car and that was much easier to understand. I dont think this gave a good or natural result either because it looks weird around her hair on her Right shoulder (as looking at the screen), Left shoulder in reality.
