$5,000 in 1973 is about $27,000 in today's money, not too shabby for matching Jingle Bells and Swimming Pool.
@ericsloss39634 жыл бұрын
Not sure there are that many other options for swimming. I guess trunks. But pool seemed to be the obvious choice. Some of these Super Matches were quite easy, while others you wld have several choices.

Today in 2020 $5,000 in 1973 is the equivalent of $29,310.81! (I started teaching in 1970 and my yearly salary was $7,000.)

That prune question: first time Gene thinks contestant gave lousy answer and then she matches 4 out 5! You can tell the way he says "weeeellllll, I guess that's one possible answer but there are lots of other good answers to this one" like he's preparing her to be disappointed. He did that continuously over the years and later on CNR would call him out on it, but he never really learned.

In these early shows, the judges were pretty liberal in letting the celebrities give verbal responses before writing them down. In a later episode they slapped Orson Bean down for doing just that and tossed out the question.

What's cool about this early Match Game stuff, is for Super Matches head-to-head, everyone didn't just choose Richard. Once people realized Richard was the best panelist they just chose him every time. To see the panelist in the top left position get picked for Super Match is super rare from 74 on. And Stu does really well. Maybe you see Gary Burghoff get chosen from the top left position, but that was earlier days than when he would sit top right in place of Charles. The dynamic between Jack and Brett is hilarious. They really seem to love busting each other's chops. It's a good schtick.

Richard Dawson actually was sort of unhappy with contestants constantly choosing him for the head to head matches. He was instrumental in getting the wheel put in during the show's later years.
