@R McLean sat in the upper left, when during an unforgettable week, the wardrobe department didn't get the right size clothes for McLean, so he had to exchange with Gene, Robert Vaughn And Richard. They complained that their clothes came back itchy and hairy so McLaren wore one less piece each day. By Friday he appeared to be naked.

H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... ~~~We're up to week 141 (of 291) for our favorite classic game show. These episodes were taped on April 2, 1976 and first aired in late April and early May of 1976. After three weeks in a row with a newbie appearing in seat #4 (never to return again, I might add), this week's panel is all "veterans," or returning friends, as I like to think of it. Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces. Plus we have: ~~Semi-regular Betty White back in the sixth seat after a two-week break. (I'm sure she'll find some way to plague Gene again this week, whether it's rolling his pant leg up or sticking tape on his back, or maybe some new prank!) ~~Isabel Sanford returning for her second and final MG week. During her debut (621-625), she was chosen three times for the H/H (by the same champion) and scored her first match! ~~And Donald Ross (aka Mr. Patti Deutsch), also back for his second and final week on the program. He first appeared way back in 1974 (episodes 276-280), but unlike Isabel, Donald wasn't chosen for the H/H during his first week. Looking ahead this week, I'd love to see Betty play the H/H again this week and break her tie with Fannie. And I'd still like to see a contestant (or two) choose Charles! He hasn't played once since episode 631! Also, it would be nice if Isabel got to play again and if Donald could score a H/H match before his MG engagement ends, but that's a lot to ask when realistically we're likely to have only 4 to 6 H/H matches this week, and based on past experience, Richard will probably play most or all of them. But most of all this week, I just want to sit back and enjoy some 1970s-style ________! ~~~Today's action: Speaking of the head-to-head match, we start right off with one! A quick recap: Last time, our champion won her second game and then scored $500 on the audience match as time expired. Now she's about to choose her H/H match celebrity partner. For her first go, she picked Richard, but they didn't match. I fully expect she'll pick him again... "Richard, please," she says. (Looking back, I've noticed that the first day of the week hasn't been lucky for Richard (or the contestants who choose him) recently. Looking back to episode 601, Richard has played the first H/H match of the week 16 times (out of 20 weeks total), and he's matched only three times! In fact, he's missed on his last 7 Mondays in a row!) Today's H/H question: "Irving __________" (I guess the producers felt bad for our champion and wanted to hand her some free cash? There's only one obvious answer here.) The contestant looks serene and confidant. It's a different story with Mr. Dawson. He's pursing his lips, rubbing his nose, and looking around for inspiration. The music plays on and Richard is scratching his head. Then he looking at Gene and repeats the question: "Irving?!" He's obviously at a loss. (If it were Brett or Charles, after this much time, Gene would be hounding them to hurry up...) Richard says he can't think of a thing, and asks to see the card and Gene obliges. "Irving blank - I think that's how it's going to remain, I can't..." says Richard, scratching his head again and looking at Betty. (I can hear the sound of someone writing something, but I'm not sure if it's Betty or another panelist.) Richard shakes his head but still doesn't have an answer. This is already the longest H/H match in the show's history. Gene kills about 20 more seconds by chit-chatting with the contestant who says she has an answer that she's happy with. Meanwhile, Richard is confabbing with Betty... Okay, Richard got an answer from someone, and is copying it onto his card, still shaking his head. Ding! Our champion gives the only reasonable answer: Irving Berlin. Richard reveals his card - he got it right! What a wild start to the week! (With a little help) Richard scores his 166th H/H match today. (I think it's perfectly fine for Richard to take an answer from another panelist. In the early days, Brett and Charles would often work together and give each other moral support when one or the other was chosen for the H/H match.) Well, apparently the answer came from Charles, not Betty. (When Richard gets his kiss from the contestant, he points to Charles, and the contestant runs upstairs to give CNR a peck on the cheek too! - Afterwards, Richard says comically about his answer: "It just came to me, through the air...".) ~~~Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note, for tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 701, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

It surprises me that almost every episode has someone hating on Brett in the comments. She's the crazy aunt during the holidays who drives everyone crazy but she was the yin to Charles' yang and the show wouldn't have been the same without her. A real fan would get that.

It is nice; they did work together well, despite the bad feelings when they split apart in 1978. (Although I'm not aware of any ill will between those two.) I thought Richard and Charles had a nice rapport and seemed to really appreciate one another's sense of humor.
