1:53 The exchange between Gene and the contestant about this country being in a "rotten mess" and female Presidents sounds like something you'd hear today (though not on a game show). Later in the show at 17:33, Gene mentions the Hong Kong flu. The more things change...

If we can ever FINALLY learn that one's demographics have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING with one's capabilities and that the most important human characteristics TRANSCEND all of that identity nonsense, perhaps we can start putting our society back together again...it's all contrived nonsense meant to push us apart...

I'm surprised they could get a big name like Ethel Merman to be on the Match Game and she was really good too. I heard Richard telling her he thought she was doing great!
@DavidLEzell Жыл бұрын
Match Game was a top-rated show with a young demographic and Ethel worked hard to remain relevant to younger people. Sometimes it worked (Airplane) and other times not so much (her disco album). But she worked and worked hard until the end of her life And that is part of the reason people who know nothing of Broadway know the name "Ethel Merman."

Ethel's comment aimed at Brett (1:10 --"Oh there she goes. My echo chamber.") was funny, but it seems to me that she was genuinely annoyed. They knew one another because Brett was married to Jack Klugman (and pregnant with their first son) when Jack played opposite Ethel Merman in the original Broadway cast of Gypsy. Notice how Ethel simply ignores Brett when she shouts out "You do Jack's part, Ethel" at 5:20.

They were STILL BEST friends grow up. Brett actually went to see Ethel Merman in concert she says in an actual episode of Match Game. Brett also had Ethel Merman's book which Ethel Merman personally signed to Brett. "To my good friend, Brett. I love you!" So nice try.

H/H match update: ... Today's action: Today we have another new champion facing the Super Match. Today's audience match question: "Ladies _________ " (My thoughts: and Gentlemen, Home Journal, Room) The celebs: Brett (Room), Charles (and Gentlemen), and Richard (only). The choice: Room The answers: Day, and Gentlemen, Room Our new champion is off to a good start. I'm trying to guess who she'll choose for the H/H match. It's got to be one of the regulars. I'm leaning to Richard, closely followed by Brett, with Charles a remote possibility... "Brett was marvelous, but Richard is my husband's name, so I've gotta go with Richard." Okay. Richard is on a winning streak, having matched his 4 most recent attempts. Today's H/H question: "__________ Chain" (This one has several possibilities, everything from supermarket chain to bicycle chain to tire chain. How about daisy chain?) The camera cuts to Gene's antics as Richard writes, but he it doesn't take long for him to file his response. The champion seems conflicted. She finally says "tire," which was one of the things I'd thought of, but she gets a negative response from the audience. She adds that "ball and" was her first thought, but she thought it had to be only one word. Actually, "ball and" sounds like a better answer to me. Let's see what Richard came up with... Richard retrieves his discarded "Ball &" response before revealing "Daisy." Maybe daisy was the best answer. No match today. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.4% (11 wins in 21 attempts). Betty - 51.4% (18 wins in 35 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.4% (24 wins in 58 attempts). Richard - 40.9% (173 wins in 423 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 728, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
