H/H match update: ... Today's action: No one on the panel was into elephant riding, so the challenger wins today, but our two-time champion departs with $6,200, not too shabby! Today's audience match question: "Arrow _________" (My thoughts: First, this is a hard question! -- Collar, Shirts, Car???) The celebs: Joey (Smith), Richard (Root), and Brett (Head) -- Wow, Brett gave the only sensible answer. Why didn't I think of that? The choice: Head The answers: Shirt, Smith, Head ("Arrowsmith" is a 1925 novel by American author Sinclair Lewis, and it won the 1926 Pulitzer Prize. I imagine some people may have been thinking of the band Aerosmith, because, as we well know, on Match Game, spelling doesn't count!) Our new champion starts off strong, winning $500 on the audience match. Here we go with a new champion, so it's time for my favorite guessing game. I think there's a good chance he'll go with Brett, but it's rare for two different contestants to choose her back-to-back. Actually, it's rare for two contestants to choose anyone but Richard back-to-back. Wow, he does choose Brett, initiating another comical conniption fit! Today's H/H question: "Shrimp _______ " (Hmm. How about shrimp cocktail? Another choice might be shrimp Louie, but cocktail sounds more basic to me.) Brett begins writing tout de suite. The camera doesn't cut back to her until after she''s started writing, but I see enough to know that it's a longish answer, which leans in the "cocktail" direction. She takes a quick peek at the lower tier (maybe Richard's suggestion) and then over to Joey, but she doesn't hesitate filing her card. The champion says "salad." Brett gasps. The audience groans. Gene looks surprised. "No?" asks the champ. Shrimp salad is a valid possibility, but I don't think Brett would have said that. No. Once again, I match Brett... "I'm sorry," she says, "I was sure it was a winner. I said Cocktail." No match today. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.4% (11 wins in 21 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.0% (25 wins in 61 attempts). Richard - 40.9% (179 wins in 438 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 747, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

It's sad to see Gene wince when Joyce playfully suggests he's an older man. The issue of his age really bothered Gene. Then in 1985, an Entertainment Tonight reporter publicly disclosed that Gene was much older than many believed. Then he had trouble finding jobs, blaming the reporter for revealing his age and subjecting him to age discrimination.
@mikes38274 жыл бұрын
Gene was just a good man who LOOOOVED being "Match Game" host. Apparently Gene had settled down in coastal Massachusetts, and some years back Gene and his daughter went to a summer concert (Sinatra) that my best friend and I also saw at Great Woods. More than a few people recognized Gene, and not only was he GREAT with his fans, but I think it made him feel really good to know that he still had a lot of fans who recognized/loved him. Brett said when MG was cancelled, it broke Gene's heart, because he thought the show still had an audience. Gene's talent was abundant in how he interacted so well between both the celebs and the contestants, juggling the personalities and continuity with ease. Plus Gene's sense of humor was underrated, and he wasn't at all condescending towards anyone. The perfect game show host, and just a sweet man, who was obviously close to his daughter. Glad I saw Gene that night.

Well what got me, is that yes Joyce suggests he's an older man but a few times on the show he has mention he was a middle age man. I think you are right thou, Gene wanted to work and I guess he knew he had to keep his age a secret to keep finding work. Always trying to break into Broadway stage. Which he was right because when ET reported his age he couldn't find work, even lost out on hosting MG again in 87 and 90. He made the joke on Kukla, Fran and Ollie that he was a grad from Limblom High school in 1837.. ;0)

@@mikes3827 I agree with you Mike. ;0) I had heard he was always good to his fans, even made appearances at the skating rink he own for the fans and skated around. Only thing that bother him was that most people didn't recognized him when he walked down the street. I wish I had gotten to meet him but never did. He even had a fan for a agent in his later years. ;0) Thank you for sharing, I love hearing stories like this about Gene and the others.. ;0)

That spot of celebrities infuriates me so much! Patty is the absolute worst, followed by this one playing now, then Fanny Flag, and lastly Betty White. Betty is the least infuriating. Nevertheless she still does from time to time. Honestly though, I believe it is a strategic move encouraged by the show. It can't be anything else because it's too coincidental to have EVERY SINGLE ONE of them answer in these ways.
