H/H match update (for episode 784 only): ... Today's action: Charles' "Honeymoon" won our champion her third game (although, to be fair, the entire panel had the exact same answer). Today's (first) audience match question: "________ Soda " (My thoughts: Baking, Club, Scotch and) The celebs: Richard (Club), Bert (Bicarbonate of), and Charles (Ice cream) The choice: Ice cream The answers: Scotch and, Baking, Ice Cream (Kudos to Charles for coming with the top answer in third position!) Our champion wisely went with Charles' suggestion instead of Richard's today. Does that mean that she might make a new choice for the head-to-head today? Or will she stick with Richard despite two misses so far? If I had to bet, I'd say she sticks with Richard... It's Richard again. Counting today, he has played all but four of the past 37 H/H questions. He's matched four of his ten most recent attempts (40% is actually a very decent success rate for the H/H), but he's missed the last four in a row (although the miss in 782 certainly wasn't his fault). Well, fingers crossed that our champion will finally score a win in the head-to-head! Today's (first) H/H question: "_______ Cherries" (My first thought was Bing. But then Maraschino comes to mind. I'm not sure if Bing cherries were a thing back in 1976, so I'll go with Maraschino.) Richard takes a minute to debate. He glances at Fannie and writes his answer. It seems to be a longish response. "I got a bunch of 'em this time!" she says, alluding to when she'd drawn a blank on the prior H/H questions. She's debating though. She says her first thought is something that Richard wouldn't have written, so she might go for her other choice. After a bit of hesitation, she says "Bing" cherries and the audience heartily applauds... Well, I guess that answers my questions about whether Bing cherries were a thing in 1976. Oh well, I already gave my answer and I can't change it now. I can't wait to see what Richard wrote! Richard wrote "Marachino" [sic]. No match this time. ~~~ A quick game results in our champion's defeat. After three victories, she goes home with $1,800. A new champion stands at the ready. Will she have better luck at the head-to-head? Today's (second) audience match question: "Pen ________ " (My thoughts: Knife, and pencil, pal) The celebs: Fannie (Pal), Charles (Knife), and Richard (and pencil) The choice: Pal The answers: (-)Manship, And Pencil, Pal Our new champion chose Fannie's suggestion and won $500. But will she choose Fannie for the head-to-head? I've seen many contestants choose Richard for the third suggestion and still pick him for the H/H (even if his answer didn't appear on the audience match board). This contestant doesn't seem like a Team Richard member to me though. Let's see... She seems to waver... She chooses Fannie! This is her second play this week (she matched on "Monday" - episode 781). Whatever the result, this will once again break the tie with Betty White (both currently have an incredible 50% accuracy score in the head-to-head). This is Fannie's 25th time playing the H/H. Today's (second) H/H question: "Sky _______" (My first thought is that this is easier than today's first question. I'll say sky blue. I guess skylark would be my second choice. Then there's sky dive/diving.) Fannie's got her "thinking" glasses on and writes her answer pretty quickly. She's looking over at Richard, but doesn't hesitate filing her card. Ding. Our champion says "Dive." Wow. I didn't think that was common or generic enough, so I discarded that answer. The audience offers only a smattering of polite applause. It doesn't seem likely, but it's certainly not impossible! Anyway, it's up to Fannie now. Fannie wrote "Cap." No match this time. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Fannie - 48.0% (12 wins in 25 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 41.4% (195 wins in 471 attempts). Brett - 41.3% (26 wins in 63 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 784, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

H/H match update (for episode 785) and End-of-Week Recap: ... ~~~Today's action: (A lot of fun and antics today, not a lot of play, and no Super-Match.) The challenger defeated the champion (who won one game and $600) in the tie-breaker, but the game took so long that the Super-Match will have to wait until next time... Stay tuned! ~~~The Week that Was: Five shows, five H/H questions (two on Thursday, none today because time ran out), but only one winner the whole week! -- Fannie 1/2, Richard 0/3 Richard's streak of being the exclusive head-to-head celebrity was broken after three weeks when Fannie was selected twice this week (by two different contestants). Richard's losses this week virtually erase the slim margin he has over Brett, from about four-tenths of one percent down to about one-tenth of one percent. Turning to the other panelists, Charles hasn't played for 13 weeks now. (Which is criminal, in my opinion.) Bert similarly was ignored by contestants, meaning that now he has only one week left to add to his stats, but that final week will be a long time out (episodes 1371-1375). However, that week will be during the "star wheel" period, so he'll have a fair chance of getting one last attempt in at the head-to-head before his stats close. Patty didn't get to play this week either, but she still has nine weeks coming up in which to finally score her first H/H match (she's been chosen twice in the past). ~~~Looking ahead to next week, our regulars will be joined by: -----Semi-regular Betty White, back after two weeks off. This will be her 39th week (of 75). Betty sits at a commendable 50% accuracy rating, between Charles with 51.0% and Fannie with 48.0%. -----Joey Bishop, appearing for his 4th week of 5 total. He last visited in 746-750, and his final week will come in episodes 871-875. He has yet to have a shot at the head-to-head. -----And Lynn Deerfield, another one-and-done guest panelist. ~~~Finally, here's our standing leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Fannie - 48.0% (12 wins in 25 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). @@sdlively27 Yes, but in this case she is being deliberately obtuse. She knew perfectly well what baseball and football were. I think the words were sometimes slow to penetrate her brain and she spoke impulsively before she gave a thought a chance to sink in. Classic ADHD, so she deserves some compassion, but again, she was just being obtuse about it in this instance. I still think the show is better with her (and Gene Richard and Charles. They were BEST friends and loved each other dearly. In an article Fannie Flagg has said about Brett and Charles "it was NEVER mean or hurtful" maybe look that article up sometime it's on Google it was all playful banter. This might be you're opinion but it's wrong. Long after Match Game ended Brett has said she loved Charles and Charles loved Brett.

Didya notice that after a while the producers of "MATCH GAME" figured out that THIS was definitely a "FEMALE" oriented game show. No? Look at the contestants folks! Ratio of FEMALES to MALES is WAAAAY outta whack! Pretty simple really? FEMALES are better at "WORDS"! MALES are generally better at "NUMBERS"! Yes, it's a male chauvinist perspective but sorry ladies that's the generation I was born into. The pre- "WOMEN'S LIBERATION" era.
