H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... Here we go with week 160 of our favorite classic game show (the final week will be 291). These episodes were taped on July 25, 1976 and first aired in mid-September of 1976. Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and this week they're joined by: ~~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg, back after two weeks away. This will be her 46th week (of 90). ~~~Dick Gautier, appearing for his fifth week of six. Dick last visited in 731-735, and his final week is coming up in early 1977 (episodes 911-915). Dick has played the head-to-head only once, but didn't score a match. ~~~And Della Reese, returning for the first time since making her "Match Game '7x" debut way back in episode 6! (That was before we met Brett or Charles!) Sadly, this is also Della's second of only three weeks of appearances (her final week will be episodes 886-890). Ms. Reese hasn't yet participated in the H/H. Last week we had another all-Richard week, a common occurrence. Richard does a fine job, but it's boring to watch him play over and over again, and most of his colleagues have better track records when it comes to matching the contestants for the big money. What will happen this week? I really, really hope Charles is called on to play the H/H again soon. It's flabbergasting how he's been ignored for so long. He hasn't been called on since his mega-run of 7 + 2 attempts back in 707-717, so we're looking at nearly 80 episodes with no CNR H/H action! I always enjoy seeing Fannie play the H/H matches. Plus, she matches at a higher rate than Richard. Time is running out for Dick Gautier to join the roster of celebs who've earned a H/H match. Della would be a great choice for the head-to-head as well, and I'd love to see her get a shot. And of course, Brett is always grandly entertaining when she plays the head-to-head. (And win or lose, another play by Brett would put some distance between her score and Richard's, which have been very close together lately!) Most likely, this week (maybe even today) will see Richard score his 200th H/H match! But whatever happens in the H/H this week, I'm sure there will be plenty of _________ to go around! (Match Game trivia: Today Dick Gautier is promoting his upcoming (1977) movie "Billy Jack Goes to Washington." Also appearing in that movie is another Match Game celeb, Lucie Arnaz, who appeared in the fourth seat for one week only, in episodes 31-35 with Bert Convy, Brett Somers, Jack Carter, Richard Dawson, and Nanette Fabray. Unfortunately, 31, 32, and 33 are "lost" episodes, so we only have two episodes available with Lucie, but she was still chosen once for the H/H, without matching however.) ~~~Today's action: (A lack of electric fans cost our champion the game in the final moment of the last show. He went home with $600.) So we start off today with our new champion playing the Super-Match! Today's audience match question: "Bon ________" (My thoughts: Voyage, Jour, Bon) The celebs: Richard (Voyage), Brett (Bons), and Fannie (-wit Teller) --- (Bonwit Teller & Co. was an American luxury department store founded by Paul Bonwit in 1895, located at Sixth Avenue and 18th Street in New York City.) The choice: Voyage The answers: Fire, Bons, Voyage A quick $500 for our new champion. I imagine it's going to be another Richard day in the H/H segment... Plot twist! Gene asks for her choice and she says "It'll be Bert." (Bert Convy via telephone? Brett? Maybe Dick, sitting in Bert's usual seat?) It seems like she's looking at the bottom tier. But she just said Richard's name two minutes ago when she called on him for the first suggestion, and now she can't think of it? Maybe all the excitement has gotten her confused! A quiet moment as the celebs look around in bemusement. "Richard!" she hollers. "Richard!" Well, so we end up with an unexciting choice for the H/H, but at least we had a moment of excitement getting there... Richard has matched five of his 15 most recent attempts. Oh, and not to put any pressure on Richard, but if he matches today, it'll be his 200th H/H match! Today's H/H question: "_______ Form" (My first thought is fungiform. Just kidding. Well, that *was* my first thought, but that's about as likely as Bert Convy making a surprise cameo today to do the head-to-head... This is hard for me. I'm drawing a blank. Life form? Application form? I'm going to take a fail on this one.) Richard comes up with something right away. There must be an obvious answer I'm not thinking of. "The only thing I can think of is 'Income tax form'," says our champion. Hmm. So I'm not the only one who pretty much drew a blank. Despite not being able to think of a good answer, I'd probably recognize one if I heard it, and this one doesn't sound very likely to me. But stranger matches have occurred on this show! Let's see where Richard's mind went... (The audience groaned in response to the champion's answer and seemed to suggest "Maiden"form or "uni"form...) Richard wrote "Maiden." (Okay, I'd say that's probably the best possible answer.) No match today. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Fannie - 48.0% (12 wins in 25 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 41.4% (199 wins in 481 attempts). Brett - 41.3% (26 wins in 63 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 796, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
