H/H match update and End-of-Week Recap: ... ~~~Today's action: After a technical mix-up requiring Ira Skutch's personal intervention, Gary's "toidy" propels our champion to her second win. Today's audience match question: "Un ________" (My thoughts: Cola*, -icycle, Unforgiven) -- *The 7-Up "Uncola" ads began in 1968... The celebs: Richard (dress), Gary (Cola), Charles (American) The choice: Cola The answers: American, Decided, Cola Our new champion scores the top answer with Gary's suggestion this time. For the H/H, she picked Richard last time, but they didn't match. Who will she choose This time? My guesses: Richard 75%, Gary 15%, Charles 5%, someone else 5%. She Sticks with Richard. He has matched 19 of his 56 most recent attempts (33.9%). More recently, he has matched twice in his last 13 attempts. Today's H/H question: "Pinball _______ " (My first thought is Pinball Wizard, but I'm not sure if that's an anachronism or not. Pinball machine might be more generic. -- edit: "Pinball Wizard" appeared on the Who's 1969 rock opera album "Tommy." The Elton John version came out in 1975. -- I'll stick with Wizard.) Richard comes up with an answer right away. Watching him write doesn't provide much in the way of clues, as both wizard and machine are similar in length anyway. He glances at Joyce as he files his card. The contestant says "Machine." That's probably the best answer. She gets a decent round of applause. Richard does his fakeout, talking about "Wizard," but he reveals "Machine"! Richard scores his 218th H/H match today. ~~~The Week that Was: A pretty decent H/H week overall! We again had six question (two on "Tuesday"), but this time we had three winners. The bright spot was seeing three different stars having a chance to play this week. --- Richard 2/4, Gary 0/1, Charles 1/1 Quickly recapping this week's panelists: Richard's overall score ended the week at 40.8% for the third consecutive time. Charles scored a win, bumping his accuracy score up from 51.6% to 52.4%, which is the highest score of all celebs with "mature" stats. (Orson Bean, Gary Burghoff, Jo Anne Worley, and Joyce Bulifant all currently have higher accuracy scores, but those scores are based on very limited data.) Speaking of Gary, he finally got to add to his data by playing again, but his miss brings his score to 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Brett sat idle with her slim lead (41.2%) over Richard. Joyce didn't get a chance to play either, and so ends the week still locked in a seemingly forever tie with Jo Anne Worley (retired from the program) at 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Susan Sullivan also didn't play the H/H. She will return for two more weeks down the road. ~~~Looking ahead to next week, it's all familiar faces as our trusty regulars are joined by: -----Semi-regular Betty White, returning after two weeks off for her 44th week (of 75). Betty has a 50% success rate in the head-to-head (tied with Fannie). -----Orson Bean, finally back after too long an absence. We last saw him in 686-690, and this will be his 12th week (of 16). Orson rules the H/H leader board with an amazing 100% success rate in the head-to-head, but he has only played 4 times... -----And rounding out next week's panel is Mary Wickes, making her fifth week of Match Game appearances (of 14 total). She last played in 846-849, and has yet to be chosen for the head-to-head. ~~~Finally, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Charles - 52.4% (33 wins in 63 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50.0% (13 wins in 26 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.2% (28 wins in 68 attempts). Richard - 40.8% (218 wins in 534 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 865, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!") -- Also, note that episode 849 was never produced.
