H/H match update: ... ~~~Today's action: Oh, sweet nostalgia and Auld Lang Syne and all that! It's time for the annual sign change: Welcome to Match Game '78!!! Cue the hugging and kissing, the balloons dropping from the sky, the general merriment, and the cameo by Johnny O! Oh wait, is this a *game* show? Once again, I think we almost forgot! After the three minute mark, we find the champion standing center stage patiently awaiting her second Super-Match on the heels of having won a game just as time ran out "yesterday." *Today's (first) audience match question: "________Cuts"* (My thoughts: Paper, Prime, Price) The celebs: Charles (Cold), Mary (Salary), Richard Dawson (Short) - The stars gave totally different answers from mine! The choice: Cold (Cold and Short both sound good.) The answers: Hair, Short, Cold - I bombed out today! But the important thing is that our champion scores a $500 win this time (after bombing out yesterday). It's hard to predict her H/H choice. I have a strange feeling that she'll choose Richard, despite bombing out with his audience match suggestion yesterday and not choosing him for the first suggestion today, despite winning with Charles's suggestion, and despite having been backstage on "Tuesday" when Fannie scored a H/H match with the prior champion... No hesitation. She picks Richard. His run of 21 straight H/H questions was interrupted by Fannie, so his count restarts today. Notably, he hasn't matched the past five times in a row, with his most recent match being in episode 1121. In fact, he's only matched twice in his past ten attempts, so it seems safe to say that his hot streak is on pause. Will he turn that around today? Stats: Richard has matched 123 of his 284 most recent attempts (43.3%), 62 of his last 144 attempts (43.1%), 43 of his last 100 attempts (43.0%), and 15 of his past 36 attempts (41.7%). His overall success rate is *42.2%* and this is his 762nd attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Joyce has matched 3 of her 4 attempts (75.0%), Fannie has matched 16 of her 32 attempts (50.0%), Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%), and Richard has matched 321 of his 761 attempts (42.2%). Neither Mary Wickes nor Richard Deacon has yet answered a H/H question. *Today's (first) H/H question: "________Assistant"* (My first thought is worthless: Virtual Assistant. Think back... Um, Nursing assistant? Administrative assistant? Sales assistant? Both of those last two sound a tad bit modern, like fancy ways of saying "secretary" and "sales clerk." But what else is there? I'll say sales assistant.) The champion looks like she's having trouble thinking of something as well (I don't blame her). Our H/H king isn't faring much better, shaking his head and rubbing the back of his head. But then he suddenly seems to be inspired: he nods and hunches over to write. It's a fairly long response, at least six letters, it seems. A quick glance to Joyce and he files his card. "Boy, I can't think of anything," she says. After a moment, she seems to give up: "My" assistant. The audience softly communicates disappointment. Yeah, I honestly doubt Richard will match today. He wrote far too long to have put "My" on his card. Well, I was right about it being a long answer. But it's also a surprising one: "Magician's". Um, really? That sounds like quite a long shot! No H/H match this time. ~~~~~ Even with all the celebratory goings-on, we managed to fit in a full game! (I just noticed the fly swatter is still hanging on the nail Gene hammered into the celebrity podium "yesterday"!) Without even hearing her second-round question, our champ wins her third game. *Today's (second) audience match question: "________Morris"* (My thoughts: William, Philip, ???) - Another "name" question! The celebs: Mr. Deacon (Philip), Fannie (Greg*), Richard (William) *How could I have forgotten MG alum Greg Morris? He appeared on the panel for 7 weeks total. First week: 126-130; Final week: 1311-1320. The choice: Greg The answers: Chester, Greg, Philip Well, she just picked Richard for the H/H and they didn't match, but it was a hard question. Does she pick him again, or try someone else? Past champions tended to stick with Richard even after numerous misses, so I have to bet this champion will too. Still no hesitation. This is Mr. Dawson's second straight H/H question. He's missed the last six in a row, which is rare but not unheard of. He also missed six in a row in episodes 502-507, and seven in a row a few times as well: (845-856, 929-937, 962-967). Stats: Richard has matched 123 of his 285 most recent attempts (43.2%), 62 of his last 145 attempts (42.8%), 43 of his last 101 attempts (42.6%), and 15 of his past 37 attempts (40.5%). His overall success rate is *42.1%* and this is his 763rd attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Joyce has matched 3 of her 4 attempts (75.0%), Fannie has matched 16 of her 32 attempts (50.0%), Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%), and Richard has matched 321 of his 762 attempts (42.1%). Neither Mary Wickes nor Richard Deacon has yet answered a H/H question. *Today's (second) H/H question: "Hold my________"* (My first thought is Beer. But that's a more recent meme, of course. Hold my place (in line)? Hold my hand? I don't know. I'll say "Hand.") She looks a bit disappointed. I imagine she was hoping for an easier question this time. Richard began writing immediately, but the camera cut away from him. Still, it seemed to be a fairly short answer. The champion is smiling. I thought that meant she had an answer she was happy with. But it doesn't seem that way. She hesitates a moment and ventures "Purse?" Not awful. It's certainly something wives said a lot while shopping with husbands. The audience lets out a loud chorus of "aw" and Richard shakes his head. Richard wrote "Hand." No H/H match today... ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50.0% (16 wins in 32 attempts). Charles - 48.6% (34 wins in 70 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts). Richard - 42.1% (321 wins in 763 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1129, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)

Does this mean that the panel would straddle the weeks? The new panel would come in on Wednesday's show?
@kevansf Жыл бұрын
Each week was always five shows (except the week of 846-850, when they only produced four knowing of a preemption). For much of the show's run, the MG week didn't coincide with the Monday-Friday calendar week due to holidays and preemptions (when the show would just be held until the next available weekday). So the day that the MG week started with a new panel shifted periodically throughout the year.

I wasn't a bret fan anyways. she always struck me as somebody trying to act like something they wasnt...a star. everybody else on the panel were known for doing something really....except her. Well being married to "Quincy" star Jack Klugman doesn't count. If you'll remember back in the bugging kinda he was on there and asked if she could be on the show cause she was driving him crazy telling him to ask them if she could be on it. Knowing that and watching how she acted on the show just really turned me off of her.
