The lights are already lit up before the logo goes up in the Match Game raptors. Very strange opening to see this. Gary Burghoff, Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Meg Bennett, Richard Dawson, and Fannie Flagg

I believe from what I was told by a studio exec from the time, they had a burned out "light dimmer" switch that was being replaced at thd beginning of the show, that's why the lights were already on.

H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... We're up to week 216 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on September 23, 1977, and originally aired in mid-October of 1977. Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and we've got three familiar faces - all with experience answering the head-to-head question - joining them this week: ~~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg returns after two weeks off for her 67th week (of 90). Fannie has a 48.3% success rate answering the H/H question (14 wins in 29 attempts). ~~~Gary Burghoff is back for his 37th week (of 43 total). He's the panelist with the best H/H success rate this week: 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Gary last filled in some blanks back in episodes 1021-1025. ~~~Last but not least, Meg Bennett is here for her second and final week on the panel. (Her debut week was 971-975). She was picked to answer a H/H question in episode 971, but didn't achieve a match. Well, King Richard dominated again last week (yawn), answering three out of four H/H questions. Reviewing the past 70 weeks, Richard has played 302 times. Everyone else combined played 49 times. (Charles had 16 opportunities, Brett 13, Fannie 9, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, Trish Stewart 1, and Marcia Wallace 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered a jaw-dropping *86.0%* of all the H/H questions over these past 70 weeks. At least we've seen a bit of variety in the H/H lately: two weeks ago Marcia Wallace had a chance, and last week Brett was chosen, so that's better than all Richard all the time. To be clear, I have nothing against Richard, and he does a fine job in the head-to-head, but I'd prefer seeing a couple of celebs in addition to Mr. Dawson playing each week. And since most other celebs have better track records at matching contestants for the big money, it's hardly a sacrifice to call on them once in a while! In fact, this week there's an embarrassment of riches on the panel for a champion hoping to win big money with a head-to-head match. We're looking at track records of 71.4% (Gary), 48.3% (Fannie), 47.8% (Charles), 42.3% (Brett), and 41.8% (Richard). All right, time to enjoy another week of fun and games with the __________s on Match Game '77! ~~~Today's action: Our champ needs five more matches in her second-round question just to tie, but she seems to draw a blank and gives an answer that matches no one. She'd won exactly $200 in total prize money after winning two games, having failed to select an answer on the audience match board both times. *Today's audience match question: "The March________"* (My thoughts: Hare, of Dimes, Revolution) The celebs: Richard (Hare), Brett (of Dimes), Gary (of Time) The choice: of Dimes The answers: Hare, of Time, of Dimes Refreshing to see someone score $500 after the last two sad misses. Now who will our new champion choose for the head-to-head? He chose Richard for the first suggestion, but took Brett's answer and won $500. I bet one of those two will be writing in a moment. If I had to bet, I'd say Richard, just because he's Richard and he's chosen over 85% of the time, despite having the lowest rate of actually matching in the H/H (excluding Meg). "Reliable Richard Dawson," he says. (This illustrates an interesting phenomenon that I've witnessed among contestants - and Gene plays into it as well - and it follows through to the modern-day comments left here under the videos: Richard is perceived as being the best at the H/H, despite the actual statistics. Of course the contestants would have no way of really knowing what the actual stats are, unless they sat at home every day and tracked the results of every H/H match, which is unlikely. But there is clearly something about Richard that makes people perceive him as being better than he is, and perhaps something about Brett (and Charles and others) that makes people perceive their performance as being worse than it actually is.) At any rate, this is now King Richard's fourth consecutive play at the head-to-head. Stats: Richard has matched 103 of his 243 most recent attempts (42.1%), 42 of his last 103 attempts (40.2%), and 23 of his last 59 attempts (37.9%). His overall success rate is *41.8%* and this is his 721th attempt so far.. For the sake of comparison: Gary has matched 5 of his 7 attempts (71.4%), Fannie has matched 14 of her 29 attempts (48.3%), Charles has matched 33 of his 69 attempts (47.8%), Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%), and Richard has matched 301 of his 720 attempts (41.8%). Meg Bennett answered one H/H question, but didn't achieve a match. *Today's H/H question: "________Bible"* (A "gimme" today: "Holy.") Richard begins to write seemingly before Gene finishes repeating the question. The champ gives the predicted answer and receives a hearty round of applause. Unsurprisingly, It's unanimous. Richard scores his 302nd H/H match today. ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). Fannie - 48.3% (14 wins in 29 attempts). Charles - 47.8% (33 wins in 69 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts). Richard - 41.9% (302 wins in 721 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1076, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)

He said he was a member of LAPD. I'll bet he could easily meet his monthly quota of arrests by visiting gay bars - I' reasonably sure he knows where they all are. Brett wondered if she could win an Emmy if she grew a moustache? She would NEVER win an Emmy (except for the loudest mouth), but I have no doubt she could grow a moustache.

In 3 Weekdays (3 Monday-Fridays) "MATCH GAME 77 (1977)" is moved to The Late Morning Time Slot at 11:00-11:30AM Between The New Price is Right & CBS-TV's Own "The Love of Life" and replacing The 1968-1974 CBS-TV Nighttime Show "HERE'S LUCY!" On November 7-11, 1977 on CBS-TV.

I have also observed that in 1977, Johnny Olson would say the people's shows, except for Richard Dawson. This even includes people from shows on other networks. For Suzanne Somers, he said, "...from _Three's Company, Suzanne Somers...." I wonder if this pissed off Dawson.
@jasonhurd43793 жыл бұрын
More likely Dawson pissed Olson off. By the time he left, Richard's outrageous ego and prima donna attitude had alienated everyone on the show, including Gene. I wouldn't be surprised if Olson did this on purpose.

So if you watch the prior episode (where the cop was introduced) and this one... and take in both of his suits... and take in his 'lilt'... and take in that he said he worked as a Hollywood cop but wouldn't specify which part of Hollywood... and take in that mustache and sweet demeanor... he kind of comes of like a man... who wouldn't be married. If you follow my drift.
