Gene is so funny. "You're not going to get 'sleeping', so everybody hold your card up." The ultimate slap. But it did cut the game short.

I can't believe nobody corrected Charles when he mistakenly said Midge when the Palmolive lady is named Madge, guess I'm showing my age here. In spite of his penchant for intentional sandbagging Avery is a funny guy

was thinking "California", but then remembered....this is Brett we're talking about, she would have been as clueless about it as Gene was...

There was an earlier episode of MG where Eric ___ in the audience match returned “Clapton” and Gene and Brett we’re clueless. They grew up with jazz, they probably didn’t even know who the Eagles were.

It doesn't matter because contestant didn't say that, but "room", I think is the best answer. And she gave it!

I cannot BELIEVE that Gene nor anybody else made a big deal that the 2nd question was about Geritol, right after the other player SAID "Geritol" for the previous question! VERY big missed opportunity there.....for shame Match Game, but then by 1979 it was well past its prime.

Gene seems rather quiet and kind of grumply in the last couple of weeks and not his usual funny self. Maybe he is tired of the bad answer he is getting from the last couple of contestants. I guess that the show looked like it was about to be canceled was bring him down.. I thought he was heartbroken when the whole show was gone but maybe he started to get heartbroken before the CBS canceled. His daughter said he was heartbroken when the show ended.

Does anyone read anywhere or heard anything about why Charles doesn't seem to want to talk much about Match Game or Lidsville for that matter? Was this not a good time in his life or did it break of his friendship with Gene and others.

H/H match update for episode 1394: ... ~~~Today's action: When I heard the question, I thought no way is our champion going to match all six stars no matter what she says. My answer was "making love..." Her answer is "sleeping." Gene shakes her hand and says "It was a pleasure having you with us." Gary hums "Taps." Well, I was right. It sounds like I matched 3 stars. The champion matched zero. But she had a profitable reign: three victories netted her $11,800, thanks in large part to a 10K H/H match with Gary. *Today's audience match question: "Boy Scout________"* My thoughts: (Didn't we have a similar Girl Scout question not too long ago? - Troop, Leader, Oath) The celebs: Brett (Troop), Fannie (Leader), Gary (Jamboree) The choice: Troop The answers: Jamboree, -s of America, Troop An easy audience match win. Let's step up to the wheel now. The wheel likes Brett again today. Doubly so. (It's chosen Brett 28 times now, compared to 18 for Charles.) Stats: This is now Brett's 101st H/H question. She's been on a losing streak lately, missing her last 6 questions in a row. That's a record for her, but not for Match Game '7x: Richard missed 6 H/H questions in a row in episodes 502-507 and 7 in a row a few times (845-856, 929-937, 962-967, 1122-1129). Anyway, Brett has matched 11 of her last 29 attempts (37.9%), and 22 out of her 49 most recent attempts (44.9%). Her overall success rate is 41.0%. *Today's H/H question: "Hotel_______"* (I want to say "Hotel California" but I don't think Brett would say that. Hotel lobby? Hotel reception? Hotel room? Tough. I think "room" might be the most generic response, but I like "lobby" better. That's what I'll say.) The champ looks puzzled. Brett is writing fairly quickly. She didn't deliberate much or seek any feedback this time. The champion gives my predicted answer. But the audience seems to hate it. Their reaction is a pretty solid zero. Huh. Well, I thought of it, and I match Brett far more often than not. Let's see... Not today. Brett went with what I thought was the most generic answer: "Room" No H/H match today. During the post-mortem, Gene throws out "hotel detective" which I think is rotten, and Elaine does suggest "Hotel California" which Fannie identifies as a song for Gene who is clearly out of his element when it comes to then-current pop culture. ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she or he has "retired" from the show and their H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 matches in 4 attempts). (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 matches in 4 attempts). Joyce Bulifant - 66.7% (4 matches in 6 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 50.0% (6 matches in 12 attempts). Charles - 48.9% (43 matches in 88 attempts). Fannie - 47.7% (21 matches in 44 attempts). Betty - 47.1% (24 matches in 51 attempts). (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 matches in 18 attempts). (*)Richard - 42.5% (373 matches in 878 attempts). Brett - 40.6% (41 matches in 101 attempts). (*)Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 matches in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1394, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. (Note: episode 849 was never produced.) These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036. These stats do, however, include results of episodes 1309 through 1317, found on channels other than this one.
