Andy Griffith, a proven serial womanizer, was the problem. He tormented Frances, said mean things about her, blew cigarette smoke in her face knowing she was allergic, made fun of her weight which karma took care of that when he aged to be obese. Ever wonder why there were so many women playing as Andy's GF on the show? He insisted they go along with his sexual demands and they left until "Helen" played along for TEN FULL Years, EVEN THOUGH Griffith WAS MARRIED AT THE TIME. Frances was a professional since she was in several big movies and Broadway including on stage with Henry Fonda. Frances was NOT a comedian, every OTHER ACTOR ON THE SHOW WAS A COMEDIAN and they never stopped being one behind the scenes which was so aggravating with the jokes, pranks being pulled. NOW WHAT DID GOOBER DO TO FRANCES TO MAKE HER DO THE SO CALLED UMBRELLA THING? We only have Andy's word that she called him and he was a known liar, lying to his wife while chasing other women.

@BethDavis-d9v Now that you mention his character. There was a fan of the show who said he met Andy Griffith on a plane. He was a big fan of the show. One irony is that while Frances Bavier openly disliked Mr. Lindsey culminating in that assault, she actually took it upon herself to guide and teach basic blocking, reactions, etc. to the performer who'd played his cousin Gomer Jim Nabors who had a nightclub performer and singer but had never attempted any kind of stage or television work before Andy Griffith had cast him in his goofy role. Not surprisingly, the Alabama-born Mr. Nabors initially felt over his head but longtime theater performer Miss Bavier took him under her wing to teach him the nitty gritty of acting which enabled him to get through not just his one year as a 'TAGS' regular but five seasons headlining 'Gomer Pyle: USMC' show. She could have easily snubbed Mr. Nabors and derided him for his inexperience but, in great contrast to how she'd treat his replacement performer, she went out of her way to help him! I think the likely reason she refused to see Mr. Griffith or Mr. Howard when they attempted to visit her was that she had taken in a large number of feral cats into her North Carolina home and had become somewhat of a shut in by the time of their attempted visit. Yes, she was nowhere close to being the neat-as-a-pin housekeeper that Aunt Bee had been. It also should be noted that the performer Polly Holliday who played the sassy server Flo on 'Alice' was born in Jasper in 1937 but I'm not sure how well they knew each other before each left there to become performers. Thanks for this!

I feel that even though she may have been hard to work with, she nevertheless felt she was a professional actor and tried to do the best she could - and the rowdy, fun loving, nonchalant behavior of some of her coworkers rubbed her the wrong way. Still, I love the character she played, and I feel sad for her, as she evidently was a rather lonely and depressed person in her later years. Yes, every person has problems and she had her share. It's the human condition. But the great majority of the people commenting here have never met her and have no real idea what was in her heart or what motivated her actions. it sounds like she did suffer from some mental issues in her last years. Sad that so many people here are glad to hatefully rake her over the coals when they don't know all about her problems. At least I'm glad that she called Andy before her death and apologized for being hard to work with.

As a KZbin content creator myself, I understand the motivation. But personally, I try to avoid it. I do try to write titles that will intrigue potential viewers, but I try not to lie. If you want to see how I do it, or judge for yourself whether I have been successful at it, my channel has the same name as my user name. I use my acting training to read poetry so as to make it come alive in a way I don't think reading it silently to yourself can ever do. Check it out.

George was so angry about getting hit with the umbrella that, later that night, he turned into Ernest Borgnine (see 6:11). A year later, his conditioned worsened when he spontaneously turned into Don Rickles.

I worked for a dentist in Siler City and Bavior was a patient. I saw her house from the outside. Considering all I just read, what they needed was a bigger liter box. I wished I could have memories of the way we thought things were. The bottom line is "forgiveness "because the Bible tells us so.

My brother’s brother in law Claude Sorot ran a store at Nashville. Claude was not impressed with George, he tried cutting in front of other customers. Claude would tell him get in the line . One time, you don’t know who I am , Claude told him , I don’t care who you are, this is my store .

She’s one of those people who should have been fired early on. Nobody seemed to like her and she didn’t seem to like anyone. Her character could have been played by 1000 other actresses as it wasn’t very interesting or demanding.

Thats back when men were men. A real man back then would not have sued a woman, or made a fedral case, over a couple of whacks with an umbrella! This gender confused, woke, sue crazy society we live in now, says whenever you get your little snowflake feelings hurt over anything, you get revenge by suing them. I agree she shouldn't have done it, and I can see why it might have created a rift, but actually the boss in charge of the actors should have had a talk with her. Reply

I once read that she didn't like playing the older woman because she was as young as her co-stars but looked much older than them. She probably didn't want to be perceived as an old person.

What the blazes did anyone expect from a guy called Goober? That said, Bavier was born and raised in NYC with a silver spoon in her mouth. She hob-nobbed with the hoity toity theater crowd in the glorious vaudeville days in Neeew York City and never baked an apple pie or a peach cobbler in her life.

The guy was called George, Goober was the character. By the way he was the first choice for the character of Spock on Star Trek and he turned down the role. He had also won the role of Gomer Pyle when Andy discovered Jim Nabors and insisted he be given the role.

You have to look at the picture as a whole. She was one of a few women versus men on the show, she was quite a bit older and had been working in the business longer than they. She probably looked at herself as more professional than these "kids" she worked with which kinda set her attitude toward the rest as far as joking around or colorful language. All that being said, no right to hit him with an umbrells....it would have made me mad as well.....but I kind of see where she is coming from and considered hard to work with. Everywhere I have ever worked, there is always that "one hard to work with person" ...even if you work in a shoe factory.
