H/H match update for episode 1418: ... ~~~Today's action: We start in the middle of a tie-breaker, and our champ is in a precarious position, needing 5 matches just to stay in the game. And when Gene finishes reading the question, I'm ready to predict that no answer will get 5 or 6 matches - there just seem to be too many possible and good responses (I might have said "Usher")... Well, color me surprised! Our champ's answer turns out to be the best possible one, matching 4 stars, but that's not enough. She never achieved a H/H match, and so her winnings from 3 games total $1,300. *Today's audience match question: "________Kaye"* My thoughts: (Danny, ???, ???) - It's been a while since we've had a dreaded "name question." Those are the hardest, because it's tough to recall who was famous and newsworthy and top-of-mind at a particular point in the past. (I notice the new champ also has a rather dubious expression on her face as she looks at the question.) The celebs: Loretta (Danny), CNR (Sammy), Scoey (O) - Sounds like I didn't really forget anyone big. Sammy Kaye was famous during the Big Band Era, so the high point of his career was already 30 or more years in the rear-view mirror back in 1979! (Although I see he had some network TV shows in the early to mid-1950s.) The choice: Danny (should be an easy $500 win today) The answers: O-, Sammy, Danny - Kudos to the panel who got them all, and in the proper order! Very nice! Apparently, two doses of David was enough for the wheel, and today it moves on to Charles! No double. (BTW, we haven't had a H/H match since 1414 with Daryl Anderson.) Stats: This is Charles's 90th H/H question (I'm hoping he'll get to 100, but it's not a sure thing. He has 5 weeks left, so 22 shows after today.) He matched last time (1413), and has matched 20 of his 40 most recent attempts (50.0%). Overall, he's matched 44 of 89 attempts (49.4%). *Today's H/H question: "Pinch of_______"* (This sounds familiar, but I'm probably thinking of "Grain of______" which feels like a semi-recent question. Anyway, for today, "Salt.") Charles decides quickly. He pauses to let Brett take a gander at his answer before leisurely filing the card away. Our new champ looks decided. No hesitation, in fact: "Salt." Charles shows no expression whatsoever. The audience response is a 9 or 10. Charles offers one of the most elegant fake-outs of all time! But he wrote "Salt." Charles scores his 45th H/H match today. Charles was simply the best!! His answers were so astute and he never acted out to get attention.

The more I watch the show the more I realize how supremely talented he was. In some ways with Richard's departure I feel like Charles started to shine even more.

@@davidganderson870 You make a good point. Richard Dawson in his last years on the show seem to take a lot of attention away from the others. Mr. Reilly was very talented, and it shows in the way he would interact with Gene Rayburn , and Brett Sommers.

@@dorinriki Exactly! (they KNOW he's just bad as Brett too, but unfortunately they'll admit it). I like them both, but I've seen episodes where Charles was even worse at hogging camera time!
