Only 50 seconds between Merrett tackling Douglas for holding the ball, and the little spat, and Douglas lining Merrett up for that hit. It was pure malice. No eyes on the footy and no attempt at it. I hope the tribunal flogs him.

Although this was a positive victory I think us bomber fans are going to get a bit over the top thinking we can win it all after Richmond and western Bulldogs, we need to keep our heads in check. Nonetheless brilliant comeback against one of the best teams, the couple of extra weeks of rest really helped out

was a good comeback from Essendon and a great game to be honest, not sure about the umpiring though... was a few eyebrow rising decisions especially that "dangerous tackle" call. why is an umpire 50 meters away able to overrule an umpire 5 meters away with a perfect angle? that being said i see Essendon having a good year, i don't think they will make it to the big one but i see them improving this year. i think the teams really in contention this year is 1. Adelaide 2. Richmond 3. Geelong and 4. Port Adelaide, i think its out of those 4 teams this year (in order of my flag favorites) but who knows anything can happen. i think Adelaide will bounce back from this as well they still look to be a class team especially when you add Walker, Lynch and B.Crouch back in.

It may only be Round 1, but mark my words; Essendon are a dark horse for this year's flag. The Crows will get redemption over the Tigers in next week's Grand Final Rematch.

It certainly is, but who are the leading Victorian contenders? Geelong? Richmond? Geelong still have their fair share of flaws, Richmond could have a premiership hangover, and recent history suggests that the interstate teams don't look capable of winning on Grand Final Day at the MCG against the best Victorian teams. That's why Essendon's window could be open right now. But I'm no more of an expert than anyone else either, that's just my theory.

My God the AFL umpires are becoming the new A League referees, they just guess now. Thursday nights umpiring was laughable and tonights was just beyond a joke. Another complete joke of a game with absolute horseshit umpiring. 5 goals Essendon scored from free kicks or dropped marks, which in the end was the deciding factor in the game. They were always at momentum killing points too. It is actually getting to the point now im starting to believe these games are rigged, AFL you had better do something about this biased victorian umpiring, i thought with a new year something might of changed but obviously not. So close to walking away from this sport and saving the thousands of dollars a year i spend on it cause it has become an absolute farce. No longer going to pay to watch Vic biased umps hand games over to the opposition.

Mate if you saw the Herald Sun front page it had all 10 of Melbourne's teams with the cup and the headline saying "It's Ours". No other sporting league in the world has this one sided competition towards an area of population. Imagine the NBA and LA with 10 basketball teams or MLB with NY with 10 baseball teams. Its never going to be a "FAIR" or "EVEN" competition until other states have more teams and a handful of Melbourne teams go bankrupt and fold. Thats hundred's of years away. I remember the Champions of Australia days when Melbourne footy teams would get a thumping away from home against SA, WA and TAS teams. Good times. All 10 Melbourne teams are the most flat track bullies in the entire country. They can't win many finals out of Melbourne and they can't play a Grand Final outside of Melbourne, they are scared they'll lose their advantage. Look at American football they play the final in a different state every year and it doesn't matter what the stadium capacity is 50, 60, 70, 80 thousand it doesn't matter. Its good for the economy and tourism in the USA. One day the Vics will realize its in the nations best interests to do it.
