Most of the Match of the Day episode broadcast on 19th April 1981, featuring highlights of games played the previous day - Ipswich v Arsenal, Notts County v Preston and Man United v West Brom. Apologies that the sound is slightly out of sync at times.

44:20 - I was behind the goals for Lou Macari's backheel goal. I remember it clear as day. I was 7 years old. Great moment. Steve Coppell was my idol. We moved to Australia in July of 1981 and I went on to play on the right wing for my club here. Formative moments.

No sky sports hype. No stupid stats. Teams had mostly british players and managers. Football was more enjoyable then.

Yes those were the days hooligans attacking each other, bananas thrown and monkey noises shouted at black or ethnics players. Non white families or supporters daren’t attend the games because they were scarred of being abused or attacked sometimes by their own fans. Oh yes those were the days when football was enjoyable for the thugs, the racists, the bigots

@@pt1sa1 my god you are annoyed by my comments. It was all like you said. We have hooligans and black players being abused. Their have been examples of that only this week on social media. I was commenting on what was on the field of play. Hooligans exist today only its not reported as much. Only a few weeks ago city and liverpool fans were fighting on the underground. Racists and bigots are still around . They peddle their vile comments on social media.

Gary Owens I totally agree with you football was a much better game back then. You could tackle, when a goal was scored you had a handshake or an arm in the air to celebrate, no knee sliding or silly dancing and the boots were the proper colour black and white not pink or orange. You could pay on the day and stand on the terraces with your mates and not have to remortgage your house for a season ticket. The players weren’t on £300,000 a week and young players weren’t given a fat contract after playing half a dozen decent games.

@@mrkipling2201 in my opinion the premier league is hyped up. There was good football and players before it started . People today tend to dismiss the football back then.

Gary Owens hyped up and manufactured. Sky sports are always trying to ‘ create ‘ excitement and atmosphere. In reality they haven’t got a clue. Football from the 80’s and early 90’s is all I watch now. Instead of going to an overpriced, atmosphereless ‘product ‘ I’ll watch proper football on KZbin and other platforms.

Didn't the Ipswich goalkeeper Paul Cooper once have a ridiculously good run of penalty saves ? Something like 10 out of 12...

Great picture quality. Oddly on my budget 7in tablet the picture had a sort of 3d effect going on. It might have been the depth of field that was the cause. Did anyone else have this?

He wanted more money (as did Brady the year before), and Arsenal wouldn't give it him. Liverpool and United offered him what he wanted, and, luckily, he chose United.

scherben thanks for sharing that information, I never knew that Liverpool were in for him as well. Like you said, luckily he chose us. Arsenal had the reputation of being traditionalists with the marble halls and the bronze bust of chapman and that probably extended to their wage structure.

As an Arsenal fan, there was defintely a lot of resentment when Stapleton left. Brady was more understandable, as he left to move to Italy, not a rival in same league. Also, it wasn't helped by fact that Neill tried to replace Stapleton with either awful signings over next few years, or very inexperienced teenagers, neither of which worked. Also, Stapleton (After he left) did try to talk O'leary into leaving Arsenal as well when they met up with Republic Of Ireland.

Villa won the league by four points. The same as six points with three points for a win from the seasons that have followed. In the 10 seasons prior to that season, the league was won by less than four points in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1980. The 1981 title wining points total of 60 points was bettered in 1971, 1974, 1978, and 1979. Did the winning teams in say 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1980 pip their rivals to the title?
