I remember going to old trafford to watch man utd in 1983-84 season and it cost £1.20 to get into the stretford end. Those were the days, none of this book and pay before hand, just turn up and pay at the gate. Oh and that was for a under 16.

A time of no-frills football, dugouts made from cut down bus shelters,no heated seats,pitches resembling ploughed fields,no pampered millionaires crying for a winter break,score a goal and get a handshake instead of been sexually assaulted by your team mates, ah small boys,jumpers for goalposts, enduring imgage.

When Wolves built that stand in another postcode from the rest of the ground, all of which was eventually condemned if memory serves me right.

0-3 flattered Wolves, they were terrible. Villa quite superb. Loved it as they totally dominated the second half, they were fluent and on fire.

@ 24-50...great shot of the Mighty Ron Saunders, he must have been purring at this excellent performance against a woeful Wolves team. I'll never know why he decided to leave when he was at the peak of his powers.

Why was that huge stand built so far from the pitch?
@seltaeb96913 жыл бұрын
So. Things change to quickly now, not that I watch it. The great Brian Moore had a big piece of plywood & unvarnished guests. Mid 60s to 90s great footy. Shame ITV don't get it anymore. The Beeb & ITV should share it & keep it simple in a broom cupboard!

How i long for these days! I was watching these 2 games and comparing them to how they would be played today. Every time these players got the ball their first though was to play it forward, whether that was a long ball, through the midfield or out to the wing. Now they just pass to the centre half, to the full back, back to the centre half - repeat half a dozen times and then give it to the midfield who repeat the same thing half a dozen times, up to the strikers who piss about between themselves and the midfielders, lose the ball and then the opposition repeats the cycle ad infinitum 🙄

When Ron Saunders abandoned his team that he built to be the most exciting in the Div. I find it deplorable really, yes money and reward was lacking but "Slowee Slowee Catchee Monkee". My God they were League Champions & won the European Cup. He should have stuck in solidarity with his Band of Brothers & seen it through. Worse, after that the team slowly fell apart.

That big main stand that runs the length of molineux apparently nearly bankrupted wolves. It doesn’t look right either, it’s so far from the pitch and doesn’t fit in with the other stands.
@infrasleep4 жыл бұрын
Every team that built new stands in the 70's (Chelsea, Sheff Utd ) went all but bankrupt and plummeted down the leagues, which is probably why no one bothered and we ended up with Bradford and Hillsborough disasters-just about every ground was decrepit and dangerous in some way-more so when you think of how many were packed in. I think Wolves had a complete new stadium plan of which that stand was phase one. As you say, it near bankrupted them and they sunk to Division 4 before better days arrived
@mrkipling22014 жыл бұрын
infrasleep I think one of the stands behind the goal at molineux was shut down after the Bradford fire because it was a wooden stand. A few clubs had the same problem. And Scunthorpe United built a new ground because it was cheaper to do that than refurbish the old showground. The old pop side at Derby was the same with the wooden structure. So many grounds just left for years and years and nothing was done to them. I have to say that although I would take watching football on terraces from this era all day long, the facilities were absolute crap. Totally agree with you.
@sfwplant4 жыл бұрын
I think there was a point when all 3 other sides were shut. I certainly went to a game there where only the end to the right (open terrace that was in a dreadful state of repair at the time) and the new stand were open.
@mrkipling22014 жыл бұрын
Steve Plant I think you’re right I seem to remember the same thing. Late 80’s I think it was.
@YJB8CCFC Жыл бұрын
@@infrasleepyou’re absolutely correct with that assertion. My club Swansea built a new east stand at the cost in 1981. At the time it cost £2M which doesn’t seem a lot in todays terms, but it crippled the club, and as quick was our ascent, we were back in the fourth division in 1986, five years after topping the first!

Palace playing in all white with the red and blue stripe. When did they change to a red and blue striped shirt?? And it looked like the palace keeper just bought a goalkeepers shirt from the local sports shop!! No badge or anything!!
@MrJonno854 жыл бұрын
They wore versions of that strip from the mid 70s until at least the 84-85 season. It was their 'Team Of The 80s' kit!
@mrkipling22014 жыл бұрын
Jon Cole I preferred the red and blue one. You??
@MrJonno854 жыл бұрын
@@mrkipling2201 Actually I liked the white with blue/red sash. They adopted a predominantly red strip with blue stripes in the late 80s, but I prefer the current (predominantly blue) version to that. At least with their current kit, having got rid of the yellow trim, they can't be accused of trying to look like Barcelona !
@edwardburek17174 жыл бұрын
I like the red/blue sash Palace kit as well, that Adidas version looks okay, but I think the best one was by Bukta. Honourable mentions are from Hummel and recently from Nike (but I am a Nike groupie).

@edwardburek17174 жыл бұрын
Yup, no shirt sponsors. Other teams were sponsored in that era, but they couldn't wear them if they were on the telly. For example, Liverpool couldn't wear their Hitachi branded shirts, and my Coventry City had to have the Talbot logo removed from their shirts if their matches were televised. Oh - and take notice of the advertising hoardings on the side of the pitch and guess which ones are still in business today.
@andrewphippsphillips14554 жыл бұрын
@@edwardburek1717 Your team had two home and two away kits because of the Talbot sponsorship. I only ever saw the Talbot strip in Shoot magazine. It was frustrating because the design was on the Subbuteo team, but a totally different looking strip on television
