In the words of Kevin Keegan I'd love it if you could find the following week's programme from 9th February as the featured game was Manchester City 1 - 3 Carlisle in Division 2. In an eventful game, City's David Phillips scored a superb early goal which was used in the MoTD opening titles for some time after, past Carlisle's reserve keeper John Blott (a convicted rapist in later life) making his only appearance for the club. Malcolm Poskett (2) and future City and West Ham star Ian Bishop scored Carlisle's goals.

Luton in the top tier...strange days indeed. Brian Stein was a terrific striker. Deserved more England caps than the one he got.

Always a haunting feeling seeing Liverpool playing at hillsborough in the old match of the day highlights. And millwall get featured on match of the day and then just over a month later they became one of the most infamous clubs in the country and made their fans some of the most hated. Even though the events at Luton wasn’t all their fault.

Yeah. I'm no Liverpool fan but seeing the terraces and especially seeing Hillsborough horrifies me, knowing what was about to happen a few years later

Domine Wimbury definitely. And in the game shown here not all of those fences had been put up to make those disgusting pens.

@@mrkipling2201 Horrible. I genuinely feel sick looking at it. Wednesday put those pens in after the near disaster of 1981 (I presume to divert people away from the centre where you'd naturally gravitate); they seem to have forgotten that they needed to be manned so people knew where to go. And that's just _one_ of the issues that happened that terrible day.
@mrkipling2201

scherben what they did was put in 2 radial fences after the 81 semi final and then another 2 at the end of the 84/85 season. A South Yorkshire police inspector said that there should be separate turnstiles for the separate pens in the summer of 1986 but because it would cost a lot and Sheffield Wednesday didn’t want to spend the money because they had put a roof on the kop which cost a bit, we got the bottleneck configuration at leppings lane. I didn’t go to our game there in 1987 but I went to the game in 1989 and the central tunnel was closed at about quarter to 3 and my dad and I were directed to the corner pen below the high banked terrace.

@@mrkipling2201 Ridiculous that the legislation of the time didn't force a closure for sections without a safety certificate such as Hillsborough. Entirely preventable tragedy as your info shows.

And that was some team Luton had back then. The best period in their history. Plus they hadn’t got that horrible plastic pitch yet. I think it was the following season they got it or the season after, 86/87. Either way it was an abomination.

paul smith definitely not one of my favourite grounds. I thought it was the 85/86 season that they got the plastic. I remember the away end getting the roof as well. Before they banned away fans.
