There's no replays now either. That incenses me. Getting a draw & either bringing the big boys to a small club or non league, or getting a draw & playing at Old Trafford or Anfield. Shame on them all & shame on all who watch the game now. It's fake.

This episode of MOTD was shown in colour, but only exists as a monochrome 16mm telerecording. Some colour episodes were kept this way as they were exported to Australia (which basically only went colour in 1975). Some goals and shorter highlights from matches (like the Chelsea Arsenal one and Colchester v Leeds 71) exist in colour, as the goals were kept for repeat showing in future programmes. Osgood's shot in this match was Goal of the Season, I think, hence another reason it was kept.

@nickabbott2242 I think it was in colour from the moment BBC1 started broadcasting in colour in late 1969. However, I believe all of David Coleman's stint exists in monochrome copies only. I think his successor, Jimmy Hill, is completely in colour.

@@EssexNonLeague you're mostly right, but I know there is at least one edition of MOTD with Jimmy Hill presenting that's a monochrome telerecording. Memory serves it's the 74/75 season and the FA Cup rounds.

Sunderland fan here, thanks so much for posting. 52,000 in the crowd, not bad for a second division side. We went on to beat the mighty Leeds Utd team in the final (with the lineup from this match), *and* Man City and Arsenal in the run up. Manager Bob Stokoe built a great side - Wearside heroes one and all!
@Edgel-in6bs
@Edgel-in6bs Жыл бұрын
Never think Stokoe built a great side- he only took them over at the end of 72, and although they scraped out of division 2 eventually, they went down again immediately and he left his job. More the 73 run and final was a fairytale, magic of the cup, showed what *could* happen.

Although not a Sunderland fan I often recall the impact Bob Stokoe had taking over mid-season with his team at a low point and shaping them to be able to beat some tremendous first division sides to win the FA Cup. Both Brian Clough and Bob Paisley proved in the 70s you can succeed with players from lower sides that can be moulded into a side like this Sunderland team. Fans of my own club Everton cried out for investment in a big squad. That resulted in hundreds of millions of pounds wasted on mostly overseas players who are not a patch on these in this clip. And ended with a team that is one of the worst I have seen since going to games since 1960.

I went to the Sunderland v Luton game, there was a train strike at the time, Luton brought 52 coaches of fans, it was a long drive home. Btw - Craftily Sunderland dispersed the Luton fans to all different parts of the ground so they couldn't get any real vocal support going for the team and were drowned out by the famous "Roker roar"

Thank you so much for this. I was 17 and on my way to a geography field course near Scarborough when the Sunderland - Luton match was being played, and as television wasn't considered to be a necessary part of the centre's facilities I haven't seen the highlights of the game until now. I also enjoyed the interview with Bob Stokoe - not only a man of impeccable honesty and integrity, but someone who understood what could be achieved if the most football-mad town in the world had a team whose desire to win matched that of their supporters.

@56-34....just look at that First Division league table and notice Man Utd a mere one point off a relegation place. A year later, they did drop into the Second Division. In truth, they had been in decline since the 1968 EC triumph, largely due to an ageing squad of players.

Absolutely brilliant. David Coleman had an ideal voice for a sports commentator. So much better to have twenty-five minutes or so of each match than just ten minutes, followed by banal analysis provided by ex-players. The atmosphere at both grounds was electric. All-seated stadiums have taken something away from football, albeit they are safer and more comfortable.

This is The Football I was brought up in though only £26,000 from 53,000 fans at Sunderland means less than 50 pence per person and that includes seated fans. lol The Roker Roar with fans right on top of the pitch. Standard shirts numbered 1 to 11. Old-style pitches that prevented the ball from whizzing 20 feet over the bar and hardly any stoppages as only 1 Substitute and almost no stoppages for injuries.

Although broadcast in colour from November 1969 (and matches had been filmed in colour since early 1969), the majority of editions up to and including the 1974/75 season only exist in black and white as the BBC re-used the tapes and they only exist as black and white film recordings that were produced for Australian TV. The majority of goals and the odd major incident were kept in colour for future use, but most full editions were wiped. I believe the first edition to still exist in colour was highlights of the 71 cup final which is a pity it was this and not another edition that season given that the tape of the full cup final exists anyways!
