Everyone seems to think this song is depressing but I think its the absolute opposite. To me, its about being down and out and coming back strong. Bad break up? You'll get through. Death in the family? They'd have wanted you to move on and live life. You get to take their memories and stories with you. Lost your job? Time to get a better one. Time to learn and grow. No one knows your strength better than you. What do you have left in tank?

You kno, "Lets see how far we've come" does not sound like "Yo, lets try again, next time it'll be better", it sounds much more like "Let's see how far we've come, now that everything is over." It sounds like "Now lets take a look at everything we managed to do, to see what we can write as Epitaph on our grave". No idea why song being depressive considered by some as something so bad that they need to somehow "turn it motivational" or smthn. This song is depressive, and its good. Finally, some song that is good-sounding, and not some whining about lost love, but rather actually meaningfull melancholy masterpiece.

@@loginlost_horizon6327 I don't see it like that at all. First of all the tempo and melody are not depressive at all. The tempo is quick and the melody is very up-beat and progressive. The symbolism in the music video also made a huge impact on me. In the music video itself you see a recounting of all the progress we've made through human history and how trying times turned into positive, progressive results. For me one of the key moments in the music video that demonstrates that the song is not actually about the world ending is at 2:27 where they say "Now it's over for me and it's over for you" before the video cuts out. When it cuts back in it cuts into fireworks and the atomic clock showing the year "2000" along with footage of people clearly celebrating the new year. Anyone who knows about the Y2K scare should recognize the significance of this part of the music video but in summary the Y2K scare was an event of mass hysteria where people thought the world would end when the clocks hit midnight, Jan 1 2000. But of course the world did not end and we all went on to celebrate the turn of the century. I personally believe that, by referencing the Y2K scare here, they were essentially saying "Look - the world didn't end. We all thought it would but it didn't." In other words the song is a hopeful one that points to moments of doom and gloom and says "all of those times in history where things were bad - where we thought the world was ending - after all was said and done we came out better for it. Look how far we've come." This is further reinforced by the rest of the video fast forwarding through events post the year 2000. The remainder of the Clinton presidency, Al Gore campaigning, Barack Obama campaigning, etc. There is nothing wrong with depressive songs or having differing interpretations of what a song means. With that said though there is also nothing wrong with pointing out valid points that could lead people to interpret this song not as depressive but as upbeat and inspiring. I've come back to this song numerous times over the past 15 years or so and it always makes me feel better when I am going through trying times or think that the state of things around me are not so great at the moment.

I'm wakin' up at the start of the end of the world But it's feeling just like every other morning before Now I wonder what my life is gonna mean if it's gone The cars are moving like a half a mile an hour and I Started staring at the passengers and waving goodbye Can you tell me what was ever really special about me all this time? But I believe the world is burning to the ground Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out Let's see how far we've come Let's see how far we've come Well I believe it all is coming to an end Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend Let's see how far we've come Let's see how far we've come I think it turned ten o' clock, but I don't really know And I can't remember caring for an hour or so Started crying and I couldn't stop myself I started running but there's nowhere to run to I sat down on the street, took a look at myself Said, "Where you going man, you know the world is headed for hell?" Say your goodbyes if you got someone you can say goodbye to I believe the world is burning to the ground Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out Let's see how far we've come (right now) Let's see how far we've come And I believe it all is coming to an end Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend Let's see how far we've come Let's see how far we've come It's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone There's no one on the corner And there's no one at home Well it was cool cool, it was just all cool Now it's over for me, and it's over for you Well it's gone, gone, baby, it's all gone There's no one on the corner And there's no one at home Well it was cool cool, it was just all cool Now it's over for me, and it's over for you I believe the world is burning to the ground Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out Let's see how far we've come Let's see how far we've come You know that I believe it all is coming to an end Oh well, I guess we're gonna pretend Let's see how far we've come (again) Let's see how far we've come Let's see how far we've come Let's see how far we've come
