The Confucius question about bird in the hat reminds me of how different things were in the 1970s. The contestant was so embarrassed to say bird do-do. The audience roared with laughter. Similarly my Mom would get so embarrased by some of the things Archie Bunker said to Edith. Such a sweet and innocent time. Good memories too.

She may have been an unwed mother, but she didn't say that. She just didn't mention a husband. She could have been divorced, a widow, or a rape victim. The CDC's latest figures (from the 2010 census) are 29% of births among non-Hispanic white women (like Arlene?) are to unwed mothers, and 72+% among black. www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hus/2011/007.pdf I've read recent stats of 30% and 75% respectively, but don't recall the source.

Does anyone else find Gene (almost) always explaining about "some contestants find certain questions harder than others" clunky and unnecessary? Do the contestants care why they get to pick their question? It's just how the game works, like choosing a celebrity on Hollywood Squares. I'm pretty sure that explanation did disappear in later episodes when the show was more established and people knew how it was played. Wastes time and doesn't add anything to the show (although many viewers still complain about certain contestants getting the "easy" questions like it isn't a Heads-Tails choice).
@Observ45er Жыл бұрын
Yes it is over repetitive in many other ways, but I think it is for the listeners that are first tuning in. I do a lot of fast forwarding. Actually, I don't think the "harder" reason is correct. It is to add some element of randomness so there is less chance the questions are selected for any contestant to have an advantage.
@ts.elliot5870 Жыл бұрын
@Echognomic101 its a hold over from the MG 60's version. Idk why they did it then but thats the origin of the statement.
@wasyertakeawaythaturmadeofcorn3 ай бұрын
I didn't notice it being said in the first few episodes (maybe I missed it), but when I heard it for the first time I wondered if something triggered it. In any case, I'm sure the reason for it is to remind folks they play a clean game. Goodson & Todman were around during the quiz show scandals, but not involved. Most folks are dumb, thus think stupid thoughts like "I bet they gave her the shitty question on purpose." They just want to remind everyone THAT'S not how they'd get ya. The panel's who's gonna get ya, and it's them getting you; no one tellin' em to. There's a time conversion on my two cents. It's the 1820's. It gets you a lot. And then I curtsied.

It takes the blame off of Gene and the Goodson-Todman people. And makes it seem more random.

Is it true you can't put al a mode on a liquid?
@TapCat6 жыл бұрын
I spent some time searching online, and could not find any sort of rule that a la mode only applies to pairing ice cream with a solid food rather than a liquid. That said, I also couldn't find a single a la mode dish that didn't involve a solid food. I think from a practical view point, though, Charles is essentially correct. If you have ice cream on a plate with some liquid, then that liquid basically just becomes a syrup or topping for the ice cream, rather than the ice cream being an accompaniment to the other food like it is with pie or cake.

You think Blood A La Mode is a less stupid answer to the question? He's not Don Dracula. What about when Saint Contestant gives a brainless bimbo answer? The question also kind of sucked.
