@@scdevon People didn't have their noses in their smart phones in 1973. We didn't have instant information at our fingertips in 1973. The major political parties were both majority centrist in 1973, not extreme right and centrist like they are now. Being anything but a straight white male was much more of a disadvantage in 1973 than it is now. That's improved a lot, but still has a way to go. Society has changed quite a bit in the past 49 years.

Some music recorded in 1973 still sounds fresh today. Music recorded in 1926 sounded "old" in 1973. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon was recorded in 1972 and could pass for being recorded today.

Here in Poland contestants are still like that. So, for example, seeing the Family Feud contestants of Steve Harvey's era was a cultural shock to me. Here you can get an energetic clapping at most. Most answers are followed by a polite clapping or a laugh, if it's funny enough (which does not happen that often).

About the ONLY thing Jack Carter ever said - or did - that was REMOTELY funny, was when he was scheduled to appear on Ed Sullivan's show. He was to appear near the end of that show, but 1 or perhaps 2 of the previous "guests" took up too much time. Then the show was live, and since there wasn't time left for Jack's whole "routine", Ed came to him and said "What can you do for a minute and a half?" (all the time remaining). Jack said "Hard boil an egg." and walked out !!

Always found it a rather inconsiderate of Gene to run around hugging and kissing after the big win because it inevitability leaves the contestant standing there alone on stage for a few moments and unsure what to do next.
