Love Charles Nelson Reilly. Thanks so much for uploading this show I am watching a marathon and enjoying every minute of it.

I agree. Charles Nelson Reilly was one of the two players who really "made" the game for me, whose absence always left the panel lacking.

I think this is the episode that marks the true beginning of the match game we know and love.

Interesting how the show was getting its sea legs at this point. Questions aren't as "cute" in their wording, and the panel is still figuring out how naughty to be and what kinds of answers are likely to make matches. And no one knew how good Richard was. He seems to still be figuring out the game, too.
@mapleleaf07 жыл бұрын
And were they afraid of insulting real people so they just used "John" and "Mary" for every question?! Glad they didn't stick with that too long.
@christopherdunne78486 жыл бұрын
As someone who actually viewed the old 1960s version of Match Game, John & Mary (along with little Johnny) were pretty much the only names! Also back then were Family Feud-esque questions...see the 1964 Match Game videos on KZbin for an example.

I wish Gong Show Jaye P. would have said something befitting that persona in reply to Charles "going deeper than a friend".

Actually, Betty White appeared on the 1973 pilot(s) of that Match Game version.

7:16 gene talks contestant dinah out of her answer, one that jaye p. matched. (you can hear jaye p. in the background go "ohhhhhh" when she changes her answer) probably led to the rule that whatever is said first is the answer. lol, you hear also brett in the background, "oh my god."
@LynxSouth5 жыл бұрын
She said, " *He* didn't have *his* pants on," when the question was about Mary putting *her* (blank) on. It was proper for Gene to tell her that her answer didn't match the question. She could still have said "her pants".

If I could have been a contestant as a child, I would have chosen Jaye P. Morgan instead of Richard Dawson for the Super Match, even though I liked Richard as a comedian. Jaye P. was a hunk of woman who launched me into puberty...

The show livened up when Charles and Brett came in. The first two weeks of the show were a bit dull.

I agree with Brett. I thought "age" was a shoo-in. And the sergeant was right about mother-n-law. I said that to. Surprised at least one of the guys didn't say that.

So I'm looking through the list of '73 episodes, and it looks like there are no more from this week? Darn. And it looks like there are several more that were skipped as well. That's unfortunate.
@ricki212257 жыл бұрын
der22672 I've been watching a lot of these match game shows lately & it seems like they've only been showing only 2 consecutive shows, then you have to jump to another show.
@der226727 жыл бұрын
That's what I've discovered as well ricki. Unfortunately the week that was coming up, had Bert Convy, Brett, Nipsey, Jo Ann Pflug, Richard, and Ann Elder was skipped entirely. I do believe that was Brett's first time in what would be her regular seat.

more consistency can be found under other posters - such as Sam Mitchell..i usually type the year (along with the show's name) and episode number i'm looking for..that reveals a lot more --- sometimes, but it's worth the effort....

I see it only took two weeks for the question writers to catch on to the gutter comedy leaning. The first two weeks were pretty clean.

I was surprised to hear them using gay way back in 1973. I suppose it was common usage even then but I thought it was a term that came into use alittle later.

+Phil Adams Way-back-when, "gay" and "queer" had different meanings. The former meant "happy" and the latter meant "peculiar" or "strange".
@brookehanley36599 жыл бұрын
Yes, at that time the word was starting to be more openly used to refer to a homosexual. It definitely was a known term for them in the seventies. And yes gay back then could still mean very happy.
@alexkotas74867 жыл бұрын
I thought gay meant both at some point.
@LynxSouth5 жыл бұрын
It was just starting at this time, to the best of my recollection. California and the entertainment industry used the term earlier than others. It really upset the women who were named Gay(e).

It’s disappointing that Richard Dawson chose to be homophobic after the “Gay” answers given. On Family Feud, there was a celebrity Black man whose turn it was and he said jokingly(I paraphrase), “Don’t kiss me, people might talk.” Richard Dawson leaned in and gave him a peck on the lips and said, “Let them talk.” So his homophobic response takes me aback. Gay is “ill”, but you’ll kiss a man on national television at your choice? And they say /we’re/ confused lol
