I agree. Charles' lack of clapping as contestants come and go is a long-standing quirk, one I've mentioned in comments before. I don't interpret it as rude, although I can see understand how others might. If it were truly a problem, Gene (or the producers) should have mentioned it to Charles OFF CAMERA (in private). That said, Gene did sound like he was joking, but what an odd joke. Like, where did that come from? Why then? But I don't think Charles was really offended or embarrassed, perhaps surprised that Gene made the comment. And I also agree that Richard came off as a heel for piling on later.

There's occasionally a contestant who decides this is his big moment in the spotlight and tries to make it into his show. Lyle is one of them. A little humor goes a long way with the contestants, but there's such a thing as too much, as Lyle demonstrates that. Richard's obvious irritation with him was perfectly reasonable to me. H/H match update and End-of-Week Recap: ... ~~~Today's action: Our champion can't come up with five "flat" celebs in the tie-breaker, so she goes home, but she won the maximum $5,600 with her single victory. Now we have a new champion facing the Super-Match! Today's audience match question: "Everything ________" (My thoughts: Is coming up roses, Is beautiful in its own way, Is going to be okay) The celebs: Trish (Is Coming Up Roses), Brett (Goes), and Edward (for nothing) The choice: Goes (I would have picked this one too, even though I didn't think of it myself.) The answers: 's Coming up Roses, is Beautiful, Goes Our new champion picked the right suggestion! I wonder if he's going to stick with Brett for the head-to-head? There's a chance he might try Trish too (he called on her for the first suggestion and he made a little joke about her when he was introduced yesterday). He didn't call on Richard for a suggestion, but I've seen plenty of contestants not choose him for the audience match and then pick him for the head-to-head... After a little joking around, he picks Richard, who says "No, I don't want to get involved." It's hard to tell if he's just being a comedian or if he's genuinely annoyed by the contestant. I think it's a little of both, but Richard seems genuinely annoyed to me. Looking back, Richard has matched six of his 15 most recent attempts. Oh, and not to put any pressure on Richard, but if he matches today, it'll be his 200th H/H match! Today's H/H question: "_______ Whistle" (My first thought is dog. Second choice would be wolf. As usual, I'll go with my first thought.) Richard thinks for a moment and looks over at Patti before he begins to write. The champion says "Train." A valid answer, and one the audience seems to like. It seems possible or even likely that Richard might have thought the same thing. Richard wrote "Police." No match today. ~~~The Week that Was: Five shows, five H/H questions, a respectable three winners this week. -- Richard 3/5 A fairly blasé week on the head-to-head front with only Richard playing. Richard retains a slim (two-tenths of one percent) lead over Brett in the H/H accuracy department. Of note, he scored his 199th H/H match this week, so it's a 99% sure thing that he'll hit 200 next week... Stay tuned! Now it's been 16 weeks that Charles hasn't played... And almost 7 weeks since Brett last played (in 762)... Patti holds steady at one for two in the H/H. Edward finished his third week (leaving three to go) without being selected for the H/H. ~~~Looking ahead to next week, our regulars will be joined by three familiar MG faces: -----Semi-regular Fannie Flagg, back after two weeks away. This will be her 46th week (of 90). She sits at a superb 48% H/H accuracy. -----Dick Gautier, back for his fifth week of six. Dick last visited recently (in 731-735), and his final week is coming up in early 1977 (episodes 911-915). Dick has played the head-to-head only once, but didn't score a match. -----And finally, look who's back! It's Della Reese who made her "Match Game '7x" debut way back in episode 6 (before Brett or Charles)! This is Della's first visit back to the show in all that time. Sadly, it's also her second of only three weeks of appearances (her final week will be episodes 886-890). Ms. Reese didn't have an opportunity to play the H/H during that first week on the show. ~~~Finally, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Fannie - 48.0% (12 wins in 25 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 41.5% (199 wins in 480 attempts). Brett - 41.3% (26 wins in 63 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 795, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
