What a lot of people don't know is that this record was mostly already recorded when they got their deal. They recorded songs each time they had money to get studio time. It was completely funded by the band before they had a deal. So, they compiled what were essentially demos when they got their deal and released this record. Jim had an uncanny ability to write extremely catchy, simple, tunes. He was a force of nature when it came to writing. What they truly excelled at was the live show. They were incredibly intense and energetic live. You can only get that good by putting in the time and MI did put in the time. Check out their 3rd major release, Freak City Soundtrack, which gives a glimpse into what they were like live.

Don't worry about the tech difficulties. Since this album was recorded in the very early 90's, they had some extra reverb, that made it sound floatier than your typical raw, driving power pop material. If Butch Vig produced these guys, we'd be talking about some real power pop pureness.
