This video illustrates the difference between a red dye and a red pigment, and is complimentary with the course on material science (bachelor 1, Conservation-Restoration program, University of Antwerp). The dye dissolves in the liquid, while the pigment grains remain intact and sink to the bottom. Note that a dye can be turned into a pigment (and thus made suitable for use in a liquid medium for painting) by precipitation on a inorganic powder (e.g. madder lake).
