Here's my theory: I think he (or someone) pick pocketed the athlete, and then planted an exact replica of his phone. But in a short amount of time before the met up, to avoid the risk of him checking his phone only to find it wasn't his phone. And then Matt asked him for the replica phone, and used another trick to make it seem like he placed it in the towel, but he really hid it somewhere on his body. As for the football... I think he rigged the football with the athlete's actual phone. With some sort of mechanical system, the phone would be held in place, so it wouldn't shake when holding the ball. And when needed, would release the phone, so it can shake around inside the football. This is my theory, have a nice day.

Here's a more possible theory. As you can see when he rips off the ball, it stays that same form as it was before. So I'm guessing there is some king of secret pocket of the ball. As he asks for a knife a touches the ball, you can see the camera changes angles, so this is where I think he slided the phone in. Hope i'm right Sorry for my bad english.
