We love Math with Confidence so much. We are currently doing first grade but my daughter has developed a great number sense from this curriculum. We are so happy with it. And plan to stick with it. We also really love The Good and the Beautiful’s new language arts. I’m looking forward to future Math with Confidence levels. And seeing the math foundation it will build. thanks for the flip through 😊

As always, I love your reviews. You go so in depth and from a teaching standpoint which is so important to me as a homeschool mom. MWC seems very similar in teaching style as Saxon with extra color for the workbooks and extra fun games. Thanks for sharing. Personally, I don’t think we’ll switch from Saxon since it seems to be working great and might as well not change it if it works good. But I will have an incoming Kindergartner in 2 yrs so I love to see what other options there are since we’ll be starting off from scratch.

Dude, if you have something that is working for you/your kiddo - stick with it! Great idea to keep some things in mind for your next kiddo. Saxon might work great for them, but then again, it might not.

We switched to math with confidence from Goof and the Beautiful math because it was all abstract. Apparently their old program was concrete to abstract but they changed it unfortunately

I love that there is that portion for what to do if your child needs more practice since I homeschooled high school and was in public school grades k-8. I was in sped math grades 2&3 and honors math in middle school. I’d have felt less called out and anxious had there been this approach and can’t wait to use for my child

I like that aspect of using MWC for early years then alternating into something like Rightstart Math or Beast Academy. We need the interactive hands on approach.

My daughter is 9 and a little behind in math. I kinda went crazy and ordered tgatb levels 1-3 math. And now looking into math with confidence 😅 my kiddo gets bored very very quickly and hence why I purchased so many level/ curriculums. Anyone with similar kiddo getting bored quickly ? I do want to mention she fell in love with tgatb La level 3 Tia ! ☺️

I think MWC is great for kids who just want/need to get the math over with. The lessons can be as short as 15 minutes total and include games. I have found that many clients I work with struggle with retaining skills and and do not develop a deep conceptual understanding with TGTB.

Once you start using this with your kiddo I would love to find out how long lessons take on average. I’m currently using Rightstart with my kids and I love it but it TAKES SO LONG. Also, do you supplement with the beast workbooks or with the online version? Thank you for the terrific and in depth video. It is very appreciated!

Hey - So we shall see how it goes and I'll try to do updates over on Instagram. I'll probably update at the end of the year here or when I do a MWC 4 video. Right now, my goal is to do the lesson, have a time limit on the game part so he can get to the practice page, then I will have him do the review page as part of independent work - that might be a different time in the day or even the next day as morning work. He is currently working with BA online, but I also have the physical copies because, TBH, I kind of tune out to what they are doing with trusted online programs.

@@homespun.childhood thanks for your reply! Yes, that is understandable with beast online unless the parent actually sits with the kiddo while they are doing it which becomes very time intensive especially if it is just being used as a supplement. Best wishes with the upcoming school year! I will be looking forward to seeing how you like the program after this year.

Do you have any experience with 4th grade yet? Would love to hear your thoughts! I’ve got a struggling 5th grader in public school right now and I’m hoping to use level 4 with her as soon as it comes out! Do you think it would be worth buying the 3rd grade PDFs and going through the assessments to see if she’s ready for level 4? I WISH there were actual placement tests, or that I could buy the assessments separately (you know how some curricula have separate test booklets…) We are going through some Math Mammoth now but it’s so challenging for her… I don’t know if she needs to be re-taug hey the concepts or if Math Mammoth is just too challenging! I’ve spent so much money trying to find the right fit for her, and the right program to SUPPLEMENT public school. Thanks for sharing!

Hey - I just added a MWC 4th grade video to my channel, so you can check that out if you haven't already. I think the level for supplementing would depend on her needs. If her multiplication and division facts are pretty solid, then I would say skip MWC 3. MWC 4 digs into long division, multi-digit multiplication, fractions, and geometry.

@homespun.childhood

So here's the deal. The paper is more like newsprint than previous volumes. This shouldn't be an issue for *most* kids. However, if you have a child who writes with a lot pressure, it will show through - not bleeding really like a pen, but raised/tactile. IF you have a kid sensitive to tactile feedback, this might be an issue.

Hi Sarah! 🌟 Thanks so much for this flip through! I’ve been waiting on a look inside MWC Grade 3! I have done K and 2nd grade. And am currently on 1st grade with my little one. I use Horizons Math as their core math and use MWC as a supplement because I love their games and mental math. But I’m looking to change Horizons as their core curriculum because I simply don’t love the Horizons teacher guides. And I feel their guides will not be helpful for me for upcoming higher grades. However Horizons is a pretty advanced math curriculum and I’m feeling like switching to just MWC will set them back. Especially my soon-to-be 3rd grader. He thrives in math. I’ve had my eye on BJU Math for a while. Do you have any thoughts on that curriculum??
@homespun.childhood
@homespun.childhood Жыл бұрын
The Horizon scope and sequence is interesting and definitely more advanced than most math curricula (multiplication/division is standard for 3rd grade, decimals for 4th grade). We use a combo of MWC and Beast Academy. The MWC gives them a deep conceptual base and fact fluency, and the Beast for a different perspective and challenge.

@@homespun.childhood Excellent!🌟 Thanks for your response💜! I’ve never thought of Beast Academy because it’s an online program and we have a more parent led homeschool. But I’ll definitely be looking into it. Otherwise I think I’ll stick with BJU Math and MWC.

For a 5th grader whose strengths are science and math and who’s goal is a math/science field, what do you like for curriculum? I was leaning towards Singapore, but it appears you left it for this. So I’m curious.

If I was in your shoes and Singapore is working, I would stick with it. MWC isn't available for that grade yet. I also really like Beast Academy. The Math With Purpose FB group (and Jessica's resources in general) is a fantastic resources.

I saw on your blog post, Math Through the Years, that you are also doing Beast Academy alongside MWC. Is that because you feel there needs to be more than what MWC offers? Or is that for "fun?" With my oldest math involves lots of tears and stretching out the time it takes to get through a lesson. We have been doing TGTB, which I think spirals too quickly. I really wish MWC was released for 4th grade as I'm still struggling what to use for her. Any suggestions? Math isn't her jam.

Hey - So I don't love TGTB for math or LA - it is a mile wide and an inch deep and I have found through my consulting work that kids often do not retain much from TGTB. How old is your oldest? We use BA for a fun supplement - my son loves the games.

@@homespun.childhood she is 9yo/rising 4th grader. We began with Horizons and that drove her to tears and I switched to TGTB. But that eventually wore off. Lol. So now I'm trying to figure out what to use. Have looked at Right Start and a little into Saxon and Apologia. At least there are lots of good options. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@mindygasca4335 Has she mastered multiplication and division facts? If not, MWC 3 might still be a good fit, and you could pair it with Beast Academy online for a challenge component.

Hello... Do you recommend MWC if you want to have your child revisit concepts due to gaps? My 10yo son is very good as mental math but struggles with time, money and haven't yet started with multiplications... I was just wondering how to fill in those gaps before the harder subjects are introduced.
@homespun.childhood

Hi, what curriculum have you been using? If you haven't used a formal math curriculum, you could move through MWC quickly to introduce and practice key math principles. MWC only goes up through 3rd grade right now. So you could move through the appropriate skills and start 4th grade MWC as your main math program when it releases summer of 2024.
