I have a 10 year old struggling reader. Her younger brother has picked up exceptionally well, and sometimes tells her what more difficult words are. She reads well unless a word is multi-syllable, or has some of the unusual combinations. I’m struggling to know how to help her. If we used this, where would I start? Or I saw you say you recommend pinwheel to struggling readers. I don’t know what that is. Should I look into that?

Hey, check out my blog post on supporting struggling readers: www.homespunchildhood.com/blog/supporting-a-struggling-reader Honestly, this is the type of work I do in literacy consults. I'm reluctant to recommend Pinwheels for a 10-year-old, especially if they already have a lot of reading skills. In those situations, I typically recommend UFLI or Recipe for Reading.

How would you compare this to Singapore? Ive been looking into MWC vs Singapore (probably Dimensions...but still undecided). Which would you recommend? My daughter will be going into 1st grade. She hasnt had any math struggles and seems to be grasping math well so far. I love the hands on and games aspect in MWC and the ease to implement it. Im not sure if Singapore would be a more solid program in terms of mental math and number sense? Im okay with the slower pace in MWC, I just want to make sure we're still getting the solid foundation in number sense and mental math though. Thanks!

Hi, I just stumpled upon your channel. Do you have any comparison videos between MWC and Singapore Dimensions and/or MWC and Singapore Primary 2022? My head is spinning trying to decide b/t these 3 for first grade! We did MWC for K and loved it. I keep wondering if its "enough" though and how the foundation it lays and mental math compares to that of Singapore? Do you have any insight into this? It seems like MWC has blended some of the aspects that I like about both Dimensions and Primary 2022, but I worry it might end up being too gentle or light. What are your thoughts with having used both Singapore and MWC? Do you supplement MWC with anything? I was considering maybe doing MWC and adding in Mastery and Beyond or something similar as needed? Thanks for any advice you can give!!

Im struggling so much with choosing a Kindergarten program. My 4 year old knows the basic consonant sounds, several special blends such as sh, th and ck. She also knows the silent E and 2 vowel rules, when they work out easily. She sounds out still and gets overwhelmed with sentences but enjoys reading lists. I feel like we are past level 1 on most programs but I don't know any of the other rules to teach her so I need something. She will be a young Kindergartener and I want something fun. She has completed Get Ready for the code and really doesn't need any more " starts with ends with" type of practice. She loves games and hands on. What do you recommend?

Hello, thanks for these reviews. Very helpful. I'm teaching a struggling 6 year old boy (7 in July). It took him a really long time to learn his alphabet and the sounds, we've been homeschooling two years. It also took him awhile recognizing numbers 1-10. He could count but it was the recognizing part. He has learnt alphabet and sounds now and we have just been working on CVC words, and started on digraphs. I had been using an older program Sing, Spell, Read and Write, but it wasn't scripted lessons and it moved to fast for my son, I was always having to find additional things to teach the concept. I also needed more instruction for teaching. I find he needs lots of extra time and practice learning a concept. Wondering if Rooted in Language would be the best fit, and which would you start with? He can read CVC words, but it is slow, he will sound out the word and then say what it is. UFIL sounded great as well , but I couldn't tell are the lessons for teaching scripted or not? You don't know of any online programs or courses (where's there is a "teacher)" that uses Science of reading approach to teaching reading? Would love to find a program where someone else is teaching (he does much better when it's mom not teaching and someone else - focuses better"). I don't mind being with him "watching" and then helping help him do work. Not sure if there is any this way, with science of reading approach? Thanks

Thank you for the flip through. Would you consider perusing Apples & Pears for spelling by sound foundations in the UK? (They have american english editions.) There are a lot of old comments about it on the well trained mind forum. It is not orton gillingham, but morphemic in approach. It’s open and go scripted, spiral review through word and sentence dictations. Levels a and b really accelerated my child’s ability to write in real life and across her curricula. It’s like really excellent fluency practice for spelling! We started my 7 year old after she had finished Recipe for Reading. We also review the spelling rule cards fro Spell to write and read, and can analyze spelling patterns that arise it words that trick her up.

It looks like they have differentiated word lists (below, at, above level) in the teacher manual. Have you seen these listed anywhere in the student manuals? I dont really want the teacher manual, but thought those lists might be nice. Also, I have used All about spelling & like it, but would like a workbook component. Any thoughts on using AAS for teaching & this for a workbook component & word list?

I have heard that placement for Nancy Larson isn't by actual grade level. Did you go through the table of contents to see where to place your son, or how did you do the placement?
@homespun.childhood
@homespun.childhood 2 ай бұрын
Hmm, I haven't heard that before. That said, you could move around a little bit, maybe age up? I think aging down would not be to the benefit of most students. The vocabulary and study skills are appropriate for the given grade levels. We did grade level because it felt appropriate content wise and I would like to leave myself room to continue levels and not have the material be no longer a good fit.

@@homespun.childhood Thanks for responding. My daughter will be in 4th grade, and I was thinking about doing third grade. On their website, they mention that parents often age down as well, but there isn't a placement test or anything. I also read about it on a Facebook group, but don't have any experience with this curriculum.

If you're using a solid, evidence-based program that is working and your child is retaining the skills, don't switch! I get it - new and shiny - but that alone isn't worth it. :)
@AM-wy5vj

If it's not broke don't' fix it. I left MM for MWC because they complained constantly about visual clutter; and I personally didn't like how multiplication chapters flowed in book 3. They are learning quicker with MWC on that specific concept. But MM is still my favorite program for mental math retention and might swing back and weave in Blue series in conjunction with MWC if I prefer how MM introduces a concept. My math dilemma is over. Now I am overthinking LA here

I would start with PW 3 to get the decoding skills in.PW 3 reviews the big things from PW 1-2. Start with their pacing, then speed up as it feels appropriate. This will help both with decoding (especially when they get to multisyllabic and content-heavy words) and with spelling.

I love waldorf curriculums but many of them are very loose and build yourself/more of an outline and im very much someone who likes a clear day to day week to week outline of what ill be doing what would you recommend for at home preschooling?
@homespun.childhood
@homespun.childhood 2 ай бұрын
For at home-preschool, I recommend keeping it really simple and playful. You can use a program like LWW preschool or guides from Whimsey days to set a theme for the week. For pre-k (think 4-5 yr old), you can add in Kate Snow's Preschool Math at Home (amzn.to/3KoFshe). You can add in phonological awareness resources too (more here: instagram.com/p/CrBBoBMLglu/?hl=en&img_index=1).

Could you skip a reading program? Or skip those lessons? If they can read and spell CVC words, you could skip those lessons or do the review ones. I have a literacy assessment course that walks you through figuring out where to begin instruction, if that is something that might help. Hey, Sarah! I need your opinion! I'm currently using Dash Into Learning as my main curriculum to teach my 4-soom-to-be-5 years old daughter, but I have found it to be lacking in differentiating the sounds of blending sounds, such as oo and th. I don't necessarily want to buy another curriculum if I don't need to. Do you think All About Reading Teacher's manual is good enough to instruct me on dipthongs, etc. or will I need the student book as well? Or is there another book out there that can instruct me? Thank you!

@homespun.childhood 2 ай бұрын
Hey! Welcome! So my daughter loves the Dash into Learning books, but they aren't really a reading program. You'll definitely want to consider a program like AAR. You can get by without the activity book, but I do recommend their readers and some form of moveable alphabet. I have a course designed for families like yours - new to teaching reading - that walks through all the things to look for in a reading program with lots of activities and video examples. You can learn more about it here: www.homespunchildhood.com/foundational-reading-course

I've been homeschooling for many years as a mom of 6 kiddos, but my youngest is turning 3 this summer and has some behavioral issues that I think largely result from needing more one on one time. So despite refusing curriculum before age 6 for most of my children, here I am searching for gentle guides to use with her since I am now a work from home mom as well and need it all laid out for me lol. That being said, I'm looking at this one and Oak Meadow's Preshool (we use Oak Meadow with our older kids). Seeing as Oak Meadow only has 1 curriculum guide before Kindergarten, and I will start my summer birthday baby in Kinder when she is 6 and not 5 due to when her birthday falls, I need a few different options. Would you saw OM preschool would be more appropriate for a 3 year old and this one would be more suited to an age 4 year? I'm also looking at Wee Folk Art. I like all 3 and figure if I use one for each year that should get us to kindergarten and be 3 different guides to just encourage and influence some intentional time with her every day. I'd love your thoughts on best order to use these in. Thanks!

It's geared towards 3-5th graders and is age appropriate content wise. Writing wise, following their pacing for a new 3rd grader writer might be tough. You can slow the units down and support your writer as needed. I am about to launch a writing guide that walks through how to support writers.

What are your thoughts on this curriculum vs all about spelling for a struggling 5th grader? We started all about spelling which requires you to start at level 1. We flew through it, but it seems the program has a lot of elements that appear “baby-ish” to my son. That also leads me to my next question, if we do switch to this program would we need to start at the beginning?

Hi! This is exactly who the program is geared towards - older students who struggle with spelling. If your son is a decent reader, this would be a good fit. I would recommend starting at level A. It really is unlike any spelling program out there.
