Find the Correlation Coefficient on Your Calculator (TI83 TI84)

Before you can find the correlation coefficient on your calculator, you MUST turn diagnostics on. After this, you just use the linear regression menu. Update 2015: On many of the new TI calculators you might have a menu come up and ask about FreqList. You should leave this blank for this calculation, so delete anything there!

correction you do have to turn diagnostic back on if and only if the calculator's ram or memory is reset (PIN SO EVERYONE CAN SEE)

Great quick summary. One quick question: both my daughter's calculators (TI84 Plus) require an extra step after "4" for linreg (ax+b). We have to scroll down 4 lines and hit enter on calculate. Any idea why?

This is due to the update to the TI83/84 operating system. It is designed to make things easier in some ways -- all new calculators have this set up now. Im going to definitely have to update the video soon as they are becoming more common for students to have now.

I turned on diagnostics... and I put in all my info, and it gives me this: Xlist:L1 Ylist:L2 Freqlist: Store RegEQ: Calculate And when I press enter, it gives me an error.

What error did it give? (one common error is "ERROR:DIM" meaning you are missing some values in your table) Also, make sure that Freqlist is set to 1.

MathBootcamps So I'm trying to do this, and I got the same problem. When modifying the FreqList: values, the calculator automatically has alpha activated, so it seems as though I have to put in some letter for a value. The default is A. Once I turned off alpha and put in a 1, I still could not calculate. I do not have a mismatch in my data lists, and I have a TI-84 Plus (silver edition). Help!

I don't know what R squared is, but r is the Correlation coefficient for a scatterplot. At least, that's what I'm using it for.

+Floyd Colston r always represents the correlation coefficient while r^2 represents the coefficient of determination. So, the corr is r.

I would check two things: (1) make sure you have the same number of numbers in each list (L1 and L2) and if you do then check (2) that you have used the same lists you have listed when you do the regression. In other words, your data is in L1 and L2 and then when you do regression, Xlist and Ylist say L1, and L2 respectively.

Final Strike No that's different ("Ln" is referring to the natural logarithm) so make sure to pay attention to whether you are going a linear regression or one with logs.
