Description: UCI Math 113B is intended for both mathematics and biology undergrads with a basic mathematics background, and it consists of an introduction to modeling biological problems using continuous ODE methods (rather than discrete methods as used in 113A). We describe the basic qualitative behavior of dynamical systems in the context of a simple population model. As time allows, we will then discuss other types of models such as chemical reactions inside the cell, or excitable systems leading to oscillations and neuronal signals. The necessary linear algebra is also discussed to avoid including additional requirements for this course.

Time 5:24: It is not yeast which divides every 20 minutes. Probably you meant E.coli. The fastest growing yeast (it is an eukaryote with a higher genome size) is Kluyveromyces marxianus with a doubling time of 50 minutes. See Bionumbers database compiled by Ron Milo and others for more numbers in biology.

In the model assuming K=kC If we start with No=B why shall the population not grow( why shall Co be zero then)? If it is true for whatever reason, what does it mean biologically?

If we interpret N and C as amounts not concentrations? should we divide the flow by the volume or let it as it is?

We should divide it by V as division by V cancels out the volume(V) dimension added by multiplication with F(dimensions=V/t).

At about 11min, shouldn't integration of c'=-aN' be c=-aN+c0t as both sides are integrated by dt?

dC/dt = - a dN/dt Multiply both sides by dt: dC = - a dN Integrate: ∫ dC = - a ∫ dN C1 and C2 being constants, left after integration: C + C1 = - a N + C2 We can now make 1 constant out of those two. This will be C0. C = - a N + C0 Hope this helps, though it’s already been a while.

I'm looking for some input. The symbol that you're using for elfa does not exist in biomethemetics with all the research I've done the symbol that is supposed to be is ancient Greek dialect, the capital letter a in lower case, a written in ancient Tex I don't understand where you're getting alpha with that symbol. Because it doesn't exist. Any input in you can give would be appreciated.
