I've been looking for this solution for a very long time. Thanks for sharing. I'm a video editor and often need to add transparent equations in my content. This is awesome.

Thanks for your solution. But from my experience, oftentimes you need to convert texts in pdf to outlines using "Print Production" tool of Acrobat DC. Otherwise, equations, even if exported with embedded fonts, will still be in form of texts rather than paths, potentially causing problem when importing into illustrator due to missing fonts. I'm wondering if there's a way to bypass this converting process.

This hasn't worked for me - The formulas are still not recognised from an EPS in AI. Any ideas?

Sorry for the late reply. It is difficult to troubleshoot without knowing more. Is the EPS a document that you made or one that you downloaded from the internet?

You can place the pdf into Illustrator. File->Place. Object->Flatten Transparency. It will pull up a box. Make sure "Convert All Text to outlines" is checked. The other boxes are for images, really, but the text one is what you are going to want for equations. You can even click the preview box to see what will change which elements of the pdf. Anyway, click "okay," and you should basically have the same results as the other method, except you are doing the whole thing from within Illustrator.
