As someone taking graduate math classes, I disagree. Oftentimes we cannot find a simpler solution to a problem until after we find a harder solution to build up intuition. The way you learn math in school is very very different to the math research process. You see and learn the refined and nice looking maths that come out of hundreds of years of people polishing proofs that were ugly the first time around.

Speaking of practice, one of the things I regret not doing is my homework when I was K-12. Never saw the purpose of it. Now I do. It's to help reinforce what I learned into my brains memory.
