How can you look a former alcoholic and drug addict in the face and say you understand their experiences better than they do?

Hitchens is the type of bitter individual who has never taken a risk in his life. And instead of opening his mind, he feels more comfortable trying to bring people dowb to his level

I think that 7:13 actually sums up everything about Peter Hitchens.

The irony of Hitchens is that he's allowed to be completely intolerant and rage against the very society that tolerates him.

Isn't willpower overcome by the urge of wanting or needing more of a specific substance? I mean, if an addict only needed to press one button to rid him or herself of an addiction, surely they all would have the willpower to simply press the button. However it is not as simple as simply pressing a button once. It is like pressing the button continuously. So it becomes a fight between willpower and the mind and body urging for more. So even as it was willpower, who would really be strong enough the contest its own body and mind, throughout life, in weak and strong moments.

Peter Hitchens has shown himself to be a science-denying fool. He's lost any credibility he may have ever had.

Matthew is right, there is such thing as addiction. The "objective diagnosis" is to *observe the withdrawal symptoms one exhibits when denied access to the substance/act they are addicted too*. However, but Peter taught Matthew a lesson in debate. Alcoholic actor vs seasoned pubic commentator & debater was ever going one way.

Wow, even the host, who I know is not a fan of Hitchens, comes to his side. In the end, if will-power is the only thing that can get you to stop, then not stopping means you have no will-power.

All these anti-Hitchens comments just go to prove he is 100% right. The only people responsible for their addictions are the addicts. Grow up and take responsibility for your lives! As for Adam Vedasz suggesting Hitchens should be injected with heroin - that is just beyond belief.

It's obvious with this being uploaded by "HazeMagazineVideo" I'm in particularly bigoted area of youtube, but it's clear hardly anyone here knows what Peter Hitchens was actually saying. He's actually spot on. The thing is with Hitchens is that he gives such a blunt summary of the situation that it strikes you as absurd until you actually look into it and find out that he's right. The sort of people passing him off in this comments section are clearly very ignorant. Hitchens is one of the most sensible people writing on this subject at the moment and it's a massive shame, but inspiring at the same time, how he is mocked for going against fashionable opinion. He's doing brilliant work and he is very knowledgeable. If you think he's an idiot you just don't know what you're talking about.

The pop-narrative around drugs and addiction has massively skewed the debate. Most people only know the science of this stuff through the filter of biased reporting and the manipulation of those with a vested interest in drug legalisation.

To be fair Hitchens points are somewhat valid, the argument shouldn't be about what works and what doesn't, it should be about the effectiveness. Sure, making it illegal stops some from using drugs and encourages people to stop. But it doesn't work for everyone and so the addicts who remain are thrown under the bus and their problems are escalated by getting reamed by the justice system. Treating it as a medical problem and focusing on why people start to take drugs and become addicted is more effective and is what needs to be focused on, not just saying "well it's their choice, fuck their circumstances".

Hitchens is 100% correct on every point and those other two can't come up with a clear and compelling answer to any question being asked.

Matthew Perry was ripped asunder by Hitchens there. Good on peter. when people try to slow him down with rhethoric and bluster he just cuts straight through all of it
