Flood 76 you are a serious lie because follow the leader by Rakim is superior to it was written by nas,,Rakim invented lyricsim and flow and nas doesn’t spit deep bars like my 3rd eye makes me shine like jewelry and it was written doesn’t have a track like follow the leader or microphone fiend and lyrics of fury which is 3 iconic and timeless tracks on it,, and it was written don’t have that on it and Rakim is better than nas both lyrically and flow and Rakim is smooth and effortless and nas is not,,,,,Rakim has the deepest lyrical content and message in the hip hop culture history because it’s about knowledge of self and spirituality,,,,,so flood 76 you seriously don’t know the hi culture history,,,Follow the leader is better then it was written,,,real talk and facts and it was written is a commercial album so nas changed up from illmatic to gain commercial success and Rakim stayed true to form,,Rakim’s first 4 albums are all hip hop culture history iconic and timeless classics that single handily changed the entire landscape and paradigm for all rappers and emcees including nas,,,…real talk and facts

Illmatic for me. I still remember I was in the military and we stopped in England. We had time off,so we walked to the club district. They knew I was American military, so they let Mr go into a club with my discman because I didn't like techno music. The DJ asked me what I was listening too and asked could he play my CD. He played " Life's a bitch" ( at my request). All the clubs had outside speakers because they were all close too each other and try to draw the crowds. People heard that song and started leaving the other clubs and flooding the club. The next day the club owner was begging to buy my CD because back then they were 6 months behind us on American music. I was such a huge fan of that album that I turned down $200 and the CD only cost me $9.99. At the time, every east coast rapper wanted to be Rakim and every west coast rapper wanted to be NWA and Nas broke that mold. As good as " it was written " was, no other rappers tried to copy Nas style the way they did after Illmatic was dropped.

It Was Written is based on the movie Belly. Everything that u saw in that movie, Nas painted descriptive visual pictures for ur brain, to be transformed onto the big screen..... Not many artists can do that, or connect with people on an entirely different level.... It Was Written is definitely in my Top 5 albums list..... Salute To Math Hoffa for doing his thing..... Wrote 4 will Smith in 98 Getting Jiggy With it album in 98. He wrote Getting Jiggy With It and Welcome 2 Miami. Probably wrote more songs and got paid a crazy back-end. So really 6 albums from 94 til 2000. Then Stillmatic in 01. Jay had an album every year from 96 -03. Plus the R Kelly Album and writing 4 Dre and other artists. They both were fire. Nas did try 2 go mainstream around his Nastrodomus album and a lil before with the hate me now, and the Will smith album.Stillmatic he went back 2 his roots . One Mic was so fire. It Was Written is amazing and also a favorite for me. However, people sleep on The Lost Tapes. He had some joints on there. “Blaze a 50, sit back in the drop top Azzure Bentley.” Purple is also one of my favorite Nas songs. That beat is so mellow and chill. No need to mention Illmatic bc it’s already established as a great debut. People neglect his other works….Stillmatic was tough too. Salute to Nas. “No Ideas Original” is a heater, masterpiece. “ From Texas metropolis….” Bars

Real MC's back in the 90's first album was always the rawest! Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Ready to Die, etc... Then they had to go commercial to appeal to the masses and then finally start getting paid on the re-up!

Illmatic (ultimately) was a compilation album. Maybe 50% of that album was verses he spit on the Bobitto/stretch Armstrong show. Though it was great, it was rymes from years of honing his skills (in my opinion). It was written is a album he wrote in way less time! It was written is not only his best album, it’s my favorite Rap album of all time?

Although It Was Written was dope as hell and represented Nas' overall growth, the unrefined rawness and hunger in young Nas' wordplay and cadence on ILLMATIC was a crazy vibe for back then. that Primo, Pete Rock, Q tip, Extra P, LES combo was the perfect compliment to Nas' ill word play.

Take it in Blood, I gave you Power, Silent Murder, Nas is Coming (pause) Supspect Witness, Live Nigga Rap show why that in 96 nobody was touching Nas lyrically at that time, In my opinion, It was Written and Illmatic are both classics, Illmatic he was more poetic, It was Written he was a lyrical assassin and made some radio friendly joints at the same time.

My brother and I have this discussion all the time. He's a few years older than me, and "It was written" was my first introduction to Nas. I got hip to Illmatic later. I, of course, dig both of them, but I just feel like "Written" was a better album. Interesting, though.
