KRS 1 was legendary for exposing Jive and Universal from as far back as the mid to late 1990's, hence why they blacklisted him and phased out conscious and back pack rap genres

Q-Tip tried to warn dudes a year prior in '91... "Industry rule #4,080... record company people are shaaaaddyy." He even got Diamond D. and Brand Nubian to record the song, "The Business," which gave aspiring rappers game and what to expect if they wanted to be "in the business." So it wasn't just KRS who tried to save them.

There's more leverage and exposure now, which is a gift and a curse. You at least had filters back then to weed not garbage and make everyone step up their craft. Now any fool can rap, and that saturated the market making it like finding a kobe steak in a trash can finding a good artist these days. At least we have youtube to remember the good ole days.

the KRS 1 scenario is why they try to keep the older artists away from younger/newer artists....they dont want the OGs giving game to younger artists...its a reason why people who really got love for our people and the culture dont last long in the game...i could never sign young black men and women to those slave contracts knowing i could school them to the game..if u sit down and explain what publishing is and how it could possibly pay u for the rest of ur life, they wouldn't sell it for basically pennies

These podcast hopefully gonna save a few aspiring musicians from singing bad paperwork. Of course you still need to know what bad contractual language looks like. Cause record contracts to the untrained eye are clever as fuck. And a lot of artist are still going to sign paperwork they know is bad cause they think it’s their only chance at their dream. But hopefully stories like this can save up and coming artist even if it’s only a few. So much power in people broadcasting the contractual horror stories of the industry.
