god i wish my teacher would have taught this. Instead she LITERALLY refused to teach me when i asked for help and instead humiliated me infront the whole class and in doing so helped to create the mindset in me that i shouldn't even try learning math seriously. Now i'm here years (like 20+) later trying to prep for an entrance exam. Sometimes i do get bitter about how different my school experience could have been with a teacher that actually did their literal JOB.

759+496 In cases like this you can also just take approx values like let's say 759 is 760 and 496 is 500. So you add 760+500 which is 1260 BUT we took approx values so just subtract , in this case we added 4 digits to 496 and 1 digit to 759 , thats a total of 5 digits we need to get rid off , so answer is 1255.
@MichaelSmith-hr3be2 ай бұрын
Even simpler, just add 500 and subtract 4.

Left to right and compliment approach is something new for me but adding or subtracting larger chunks first and then add/subtract the remaining is something I have been doing for very long time. I didn't learn it from anywhere but it is something that was logical and most people do similar thing. Like chunks of 100s, 50s, 25s, 10s, 5s first then add/subtract the remaining.

I would make it "even easier", ... as I would note that 496 is short of 500 by 4, ... so I would add 500 to 759, ... an easy addition resulting in 1259, ... and then reduce it mentally by 4, obviously, since 496 is four less than 500, ... resulting in 1255. And that all happens in a "split second", ... a "blink of an eye", so to speak. Oh, I didn't watch enough of the video, ... I see where you gave that same analysis at about 3:15 into the video. Actually, you are not creating an "illusion" that you are faster than a calculator, ... you are faster than a calculator, ... because it takes a little time to punch in the numbers, and the mathematical operators, and then the "equal" sign.

While not mental math I observed some fast math in Japan in 1965. I was in the Navy and the ship stopped in Japan for a few days, so I went shopping mostly in electronics stores. The salespeople in the Japanese stores were not using calculators but abacuss. I knew what an abacus was but had never seen one used. These Japanese had been using them since childhood and were masters at it. I could not believe how fast they could move those beads on the abacus and have a mathematical answer. It was as you say faster than a calculator.

This is how I always calculated maths in my head, I would break it up in separate equations. I’m glad to see I was doing it right the whole time.

Ty. My job as a pool maintenance tech has me doing simple math like this quite often and I always jump around too much in my head about a good way to do it.

I actually learned this when I was still in kumon. They trained me to add and subtract from left to right and honestly it's been extremely useful and made me calculate addition and subtraction on paper quickly without doing overs and stuff
