I once challenged myself to learn the first 800. I accomplished this using the same phonetic base as you describe but I built a second layer on top of personal images for every number from 0 to 99. I then combined the two layers to form ridiculous, elaborate mental movie sequences. It worked exceptionally well.

I have a tip for beginners which helped me a lot When it comes to long words like "calculate", it takes some time fo translate the sounds into numbers, but when you break it down into syllables everything becomes so fast as you're more focused on analyzing on one syllable instead of multiple syllables at the same time.

I memorized 300 digits of Pi through patterns like: 3.1415 is 345 with 1 between each digit. It worked pretty well but the digits after 300 seem to have more strange patterns which are much harder to memorize 😢

Its actually easy, Just remember the first number like 3.14159265... then just put some random numbers like 4892547294739589382948721428829138 It won't be correct but tell them that it is just the number around 1000 digits

i memorized the first 200 digits of Pi just by the order of the numbers. I could start at any point if I wanted and start saying it in order. I can't go backwards...but It only took me a few hours at work to learn that. Some people are amazing though... the world record is 40,000 numbers? Maybe more... but that guy sees a movie being created in his mind with shapes and colours... each thing represents a number.. so he just watches the pictures in his mind and says the numbers. very strange! it's on youtube somewhere.
