Probably the most comprehensive review that I have watched in respect to camera+lenses. I am very impressed with the clarity and sharpness of the 20-70mm f/4 when compared to the much more expensive G-Master lens. The only thing that I would have liked to have seen in your sample images would be daylight shots of a variety of subjects and conditions. Obviously your night shots were taken with the camera mounted on a tri-pod. I would have liked to have seen some examples of "hand held" shots taken under varying lighting conditions but basically you have "sold me" on the performance of the 20-70 f/4. I am wanting to go from Canon to Sony and I believe your video has solidified my decision. I would hope this lens (the G lens would perform equally well mounted on a Sony Alpha a7 Mk IV, the camera of my choice (and within my budget). Thank you my friend for this fine critique.

Hi Bro, I have both lenses and have to say that the GM II is specially designed for Low light F2.8 + the best Bokeh effects with corner to corner sharpness at F2.8 throughout its entire focal range. Hence, This part GMII beats the 20-70mm hands down, as the 20-70mm F4 does not have that feature/design and not meant to be, which is an important point. The two lenses are designed for different purposes. Also, I think in your comparison, if you shoot at F8-11, at this aperture, the Image would be definitely similar. In fact, if we shoot at F8-11, most good lens will produce similar results, and the difference will be minimal. As at this aperture F8-11, it's not the "difficult" part of lens design.

My main concern with the GM2 has been the size when compared to the 20-70 G. I want the f/2.8 for the bokeh on the wider range to have more of a blur, so was eyeing the GM2. 9:09 shows me how much of a difference the lens would be with the hood on, as I'll be shooting with the hood on during the day, and has pretty much put me off. Thanks for this comparison!

I have exactly this combo of lens and camera. The only thing to be aware of is that the lens is a little soft around the edges at 35mm. Stopped down to f11 at this zoom range and it becomes acceptable.

Finally a review that actually provides a concrete example of what you could accomplish with these lenses and camera, not just talking about specs that can be found elsewhere. You are a VERY talented photographer., the pictures are incredible sharp and well composed. For the NY shots, did you do any of them manually or used tripod always ?. I 've just bought the A7RV (could not pass the B&H offer of 400 off to the price) , I already have the Tamron 28-75, a great lens too and several GM primes, never considered buying the 24-70 GM for its price and weight, this 20-70 looks very tempting, in particular for its low weight and corner to corner sharpness. I've just subscribed to your channel and will take a look at your video with 50 tips for the RV .....well done !!!!....oh, one more question . the video at he start of the 24-70 demo, was that an 8K with the RV?

Did you choose one over the other or own both? I have the 24-70mm GMii but use that for more pro work. I am looking to trade my 16-35mm f4 PZ for the 20-70mm as a pure travel lens. A little size and weight saving and just the one lens to take - possibly with my B camera A7cR.

Ive got both of those and want both. You have an idea if you could be shooting really wide on a outing take the 16-35, for a more general outing 20-70. Both are nice and light compared to the GM primes I hump around for specific tasks

First of all: thank you very much for the great information and the great video. Does the tube of the 20-70 f/4 lens extend when you hold the lens downwards? Kind regards. (Ah, ich glaube Sie verstehen deutsch 😀)

Thanks for the comparison, but as others say in a tripod and f8-f11 you’ll see very little differences. BTW my friend, the fake full moon pasted in one if the pics (in 15:18) is not really necessary to complete your already top pic.

The 24-70 f/2.8 by Sony vs Nikon Z, which is superior, and which do you prefer?
@mathphotographer Жыл бұрын
They are both excellent if shot (Sony) on the a7R V or Alpha 1 and (Nikon) Z9. Its the combination of camera plus lens which gives the final performance :)

i think the 20-70 f4 with a 85mm 1.4 or something like that would be the perfect pair for travel.

I’ve watched a lot of your videos and they are very educational. I have come to enjoy the SL2-S. I’m not a professional, but enjoy taking photos and doing training videos. Recently I sold one of my SL2-S’s for a Sony FX3, just for efficiency purposes of videos. Considering selling another SL2-S and getting a Sony A7R5 as a hybrid. I was wondering your opinion if that would be a good idea? Thanks so much. Keep up the good work.

Although I am not interested in Sony and Sony lenses I enjoyed the shots, in particular Singapore and in combination with that music made it a great experience. Just talking about you this afternoon with a fellow photographer about your Giga pixel shots. He wants to do the same thing for a promotion shot so I will send him links to your videos on that subject so he can have peek on what's possible. Thanks for sharing the "goodies" and a have great weekend !

I just got the 24-70mm GMII. I've only used it for 5 minutes but right away I can the difference in size and weight. I can also tell that the 20-70 was sharper wide open at f4 vs the GMII at f2.8. The GMII also has some chromatic aberration at f2.8. If you stop it down im sure this is a non-issue. I'm going to be testing it this next week and I'll know more.

Did you find out more?
@benldr Жыл бұрын
@@Sparky_oto yes, actually I was all wrong. The GM is the better lens I'm all regards. I simply wasn't shooting at a fast enough shutter speed. The added weight makes might have thrown me off. It's a great lens. There are times I miss the weight and size and wider angle of the 20-70mm, but for the most part the GM is the more useful lens.
@Sparky_oto Жыл бұрын
@@benldr ahh understandable! I switched from Fuji x-t4 to Sony a7r5 and had the same problem with shutter speed - because of the increased resolution, I needed noticeably higher shutter speed even with IBIS on Re 20-70 v 24-70, is the sharpness difference that obvious? I’m contemplating either getting the 24-70 or the 20-70 + 24/1.4 to cover more uses too. Thanks!
@benldr Жыл бұрын
@@Sparky_oto they are both fantastic. The GM is better but the 20-70mm is so good too.
@Sparky_oto Жыл бұрын
@@benldr Thanks! I'm deciding between getting the 20-70 for 800USD or 24-70GM2 for 1600USD. Great discount either way, so comes down to whether the better sharpness / faster aperture on 24-70GM2 is worth the extra 800USD over the 20-70/4 with the smaller / lighter / wider advantages!

I purchased the Sony A7 MKIII from B&H photo to round out my collection 0f cameras that started 16 years ago when i purchased my first DSLR, Pentax K100D Super. Over the years i got involved with some event photography and i started to expand my cameras beyond the many Pentax cameras that I own, they include full frame, APSC and Micro 4/3 cameras. I enjoy using different cameras and added the Sony because of the 20-70mm f4, i have a 24-70 F2.8 Pentax on the K1 MKII and a Sigma 24-70 F2.8 for my Panasonic S5 and S5 MKII. The extra reach of the 20-70 will allow me to carry one lens and camera when I start my fall photography in the coming weeks, if I need to add something wider i can add a Nikon Z6 MKII with the 14-30mm lens.

Well explained and great video . Am full time Nikon shooter that ventured into the Sony system with the A7iv ,but is disappointed with the color rendition . Am a very experienced shooter and working with Sony on people of color is a huge problem. I have tried lots of raw developers and the problem exists . I have finally decided to get done with the A7iv,I was told that that exact problem was solved on the A7RV. That the A7RV white balance was greatly improved . I really want to know your view as someone who has shot with all these systems . Thanks in advance .
@mathphotographer Жыл бұрын
I think color rendering is great on the Sony a7R V with adequate lenses. And White Balance can be customised in various ways inside the camera body BEFORE post-processing. I had no issues so far with the a7R V. Having said that, the best color science I always get with my Hasselblad X2D, based on the Hasselblad Natural Color Science embedded in the camera body I get THE best outcomes.
