As someone who has struggled with math I can say that what's also very crucial to learning mathematical concepts is distinguishing between learning styles and being realistic. Arithmetic vs algebra and so on defer in how you show cumulative knowledge, algebra does not require you to be a mental calculator or be really good at sums, it wants those to have an understanding of functions of arithmetic; the calculations are less important. It's adjacent to someone showing off how many digits of pi they memorized, and you being smart enough to know that it has no real applicable benefit other than memory training.

One thing I didn't find out till years after school and college; people who do well at maths generally seem to view it as a game, and if you can get into the mindset of poking at a problem and just trying different things to see what numbers/terms fall out, then once you've got techniques down a bit the its-a-game attitude leads to real fluency

Math is beautiful. The order of detail we add to it and how we assess what we know. I like how she disregards the false ideal or fallacy that you a get it or your must be defined as dumb/unintellegent/not smart/unable to learn. Knowledge has no definition for a person, it is seperate from human identity and can be gained or lost based on effort, trial, and access to information and health.

Okay… I’ve just started this video and I AM going to watch it all the way through. But one thing I think helped me with math is thinking about it like a puzzle or game. I have ADHD, have been medicated since my diagnosis, and when I was able to understand how to follow the lesson, my math assignments became like puzzles I could spend literal HOURS on if I was allowed so (and English is my best and most favorite subject). This was especially so when we did assignments on websites that would automatically tell you whether or not you got the right answer after plugging it in.
@vfclists13 күн бұрын
Maths is difficult because we try to fit it with practical intuition, ie we try to use physical concepts and objects we can grasp to do maths. Once we recognize the need to break that link and think of it in terms of logical consequences, ie syntactically correct formulae derivation and how that maps back into observable, measurable phenomena it all becomes easier.

As someone who struggled a LOT at maths in high school (I graduated last year) seeing this video earlier would have helped me so much… I just gave up on understanding it at some point, and somehow got through because I was very good in all my other subjects. Even though I have dyscalculia and constantly mix up and forget numbers, I really do blame my teachers who would always just give up on me and seemed like they were teaching the class to those who were already really good, instead of trying to explain the basics to me so I could at least get the minimum of understanding. But at that point it was already too late, and I couldn’t catch up on all these years of confusion. The French educational system really failed me in that aspect

On top of the knowledge required for the exams, you need either a high intellect, or a lot of training in different proof patterns and methods. Thats pretty sad honestly, since it requires a much further depth of knowledge, knowing every possible use case of the concept, etc. I am currently 7 weeks behind in my university and have exams in the end of january. Your videos are consistently excellent! I'm curious about how you've developed such an extensive vocabulary. Your GCSE English video was incredibly informative, but I'm interested in learning more about your personal strategies for expanding vocabulary. Do you have any specific reading recommendations or techniques you've found helpful? Perhaps your educational background, like the schooling system has played a role in your word knowledge. This can even be a video suggestion :)
@girlinworldАй бұрын
Hey! Thank you so much 😊 For getting a wider vocabulary, surprisingly, I'm not as much of a bookworm as I seem. I do still read books and do like a lot of books, expecially non-fiction, but I do mostly prefer to watch most things. One thing I will say is that the content you choose to consume online can have a big impact on your vocabulary. I grew up watching channels like Vsauce and Veritasium, just cause I found their stuff interesting. I feel like watching those nerdy channels growing up helped to form my lexicon. But another thing that helped is just the fact I love linguistics. I have always been fascinated and curious about language my whole life, and never realised untill last year that there's a whole field of study surrounding it. I am going to study it in uni! I just genuinely love speaking and listening so when I was younger I would go down rabbit holes on online thesaurus and dictionaries just looking for related words I never knew existed cause I'm a nerd with no life who genuinely finds it fun(!) I am really flattered by your comments on my vocabulary but I still feel like I have a long way to go. The beauty of linguistics is you can never know everything. You can spend a whole lifetime studying it and still not have scratched the surface of every piece of knowledge it has to offer. Right now, I am using an app called "Elevate" to help me improve my ability to think of strong vocabulary on the spot. Their game on synonyms is really helpful and i often find a lot of my weaknesses there. I hope this comment wasn't too long and I hope you find at least one piece of advice that suits you! Thank you for taking the time out of your day to watch and write such a lovely comment 💗

One thing about math is you don't need to "understand", you need to stop trying to make sense of it and practice! practice, muscle memory, and training yourself to follow rules just seeing the problem. after lots and I mean LOTS of active recall and diverse practice sheets of your problem areas I feel one should be decent at math. Also watching people solve questions at first, instead of scratching your head trying to understand numbers- goes a mile. Good luck ❤️

same, I used to be counted as one of the worst math students in my class. I really loved math and mostly understood the concepts , but practicing it wasn't something I had thought. I had an understanding that understanding concepts was everything I needed to do in order to get a question right which indeed was a very important thing to do in order to get a question right but wasn't everything that was there to do in order to get a question right ( how would you get a question right if you commit a calculation mistake or don't approach the question properly or right ). I committed a lot of calculation mistakes and had a wrong approach to most of the questions. I was the one who sometimes or mostly wrote the question wrong . I had always wanted to be an astronaut now I wanna be a partical physicist. I knew that being an astronaut required a good hold on math and a lot of advanced math, so I would be worried all the time instead of trying to solve a lot of questions. I somehow had started to solve a lot of questions by the end of my middle school and managed to get a better score yet it wasn't very satisfactory. In the beginning of 9th grade I didn't show much interest in solving questions but as our exams started to approach i got a little attentive. I had and still have a boy in my class who could solve questions unbelievably fast. He could do it before we could even read the question properly. Now it's nearly the end of 10th grade and I i am seen to be doing it faster than him . I really hope to keep on doing it.

I have, for years. I even had a tutor who would comes to my house, my grandmother is good at math and I would go to her for help, I even stay after school. Yet I still don’t understand.

@@rojoshorty Hey, dude, I feel you. You're clearly putting in a lot of effort, but you should understand that you don't always have to understand math the way other people do. It's okay to take time to understand things slowly, as people understand things differently. the important thing is to be clear with concepts and then move on :)

On the remembering part, the whole tower won't crumble by forgetting a piece if you have a decent foundation. You can just derive your lost knowledge from the rest that you remember. I remember explicitly not memorizing the inverse trig derivatives for a Calculus quiz because you can solve for them during the quiz itself if you know implicit diff and trig. I also don't remember the sum of arithmetic/geometric series, but I know I could get them If i have pen, paper, and 30 seconds. I guess it's more efficient to remember the process of getting things than individual facts. Makes forgetting less of a problem.

We to to online school so asking questions was in everyone’s radar we would all write down in the chat box that we don’t understand, and everyone was so encouraging. And yes I ended having all a’s in high school bc of this

My problem is probably the attention, cuz I have no lack of knowledge and I'm very logical. I'm doing my calculations faster than anyone I know(in rl), but I skip crucial informations. Btw: I subbed

i always hated math since math was introduced to me but i’m starting to like it. math is really easy and fun to learn once you undersand the concepts. but really frustrating and hard when you don’t. all those “stupid” & “this makes no sense” equations do make sense you just don’t understand it yet!
