Fun fact: The scene in which Matilda is dancing in the living room and learning to use her powers, everyone on set was dancing along with her. Mara Wilson was afraid to dance by herself, so Danny Devito told her that everyone would be dancing so she wouldn’t be afraid of dancing by herself. They actually had everyone dance from the cameramen, to whoever was on set. That shows he cares about who he has working with him. Also, the woman who plays Ms. Trunchbull, Pam Ferris, is a very sweet and loving woman and the kids loved working with her. This shows that Danny Devito had himself a top picked cast lineup.

@@JamieS1992 don't think like that. We all learn something new every day. Danny Devito is a class act of a guy and wanted to help make the movie be better than what others could’ve done. To have him direct, narrate, and star in it was just added bonuses all around. His then wife, Rhea Pearlman, helped make the movie even better because they were actually married to each other playing a married couple. Both made sure everyone had a great time.
@marcpower41679 ай бұрын
Mara Wilson's mother was in the final stages of terminal cancer during production, so Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman, often took her in and we're essentially her guardians during that time. Once the film was finished, there was concern her mother wouldn't survive long enough to see the official release. Danny made arrangements with the producers for her to receive an advance copy so she was able to see her daughter's movie before she died.

A young lover of reading, Mara’s mother encouraged her to audition for the part, as she had read Dahl’s original novel and believed the protagonist to be an incredibly strong character. Signing up for the part, Mara was eventually awarded the job and went on to enjoy several pool parties and events with DeVito, his wife Rhea Perlman, and the rest of the cast. In March 1995, however, during the production of Matilda, Mara’s mother, Suzie, was diagnosed with breast cancer, and Mara struggled to contain her concern. Speaking to Parade in 2013, Mara noted: “I remember feeling, when I was part of Matilda, that it was nice because I could focus on that and I could focus on everything good that was going on in my life”. Though life on set was made more than manageable due to Danny DeVito and Rhea’s offers to host Mara anytime her parents needed to go to the hospital, as the actress comments, “It felt very familial on that set”. “I was going through a hard time, and I know I had hard days, but everyone on the film was so nice. Danny and Rhea were like my favourite aunt and uncle. It was wonderful,” Mara added. “I remember feeling anxious when the movie wrapped, and it was really hard to go back to being normal and dealing with my mom’s sickness…I definitely feel like having that family there, and having people willing to take care of us and help us out, made it easier,” Mara continued. Unfortunately, Suzie Wilson would pass away in April 1996, mere months before the release of the film she was so desperate to see. Years after her mother’s death, however, Danny DeVito revealed to Mara that he actually visited her mother in the hospital and allowed her to watch a near-completed version of the film, a heartwarming gift from the director and cultural icon. As Mara Wilson notes in her memoir, Where Am I Now?, “They’re great people; they were really there for me and my family”.

@@hanzo2001 Yes. Though the book is far better than the film. The same with Charlie & the chocolate factory (both versions). Dahl hated the first one with Gene Wilder. His book Esio Trot, which is aimed at adults, was also made into a film. And his 'Tales of the Unexpected' was a very popular TV series in the 80s. Dahl was a remarkable man. Danny DeVito is the dad, the narrator and the director of the film. His wife in the film is his actual wife. They are permanently separated though, but they say they get along much better now, which is why they didn't get divorced. When Maltida is tormenting Mrs. Trumbull and Trumbull smashes through the door, a lunchbox falls to the floor that say "Greetings from Asbury Park." That is Danny DeVito's hometown and is adjacent to my hometown in New Jersey.

And yes, it can be inherited genetically, though even then it takes time to present, usually well into adulthood, though some children with the gene can develop it early. A case in point is a young character in the cataclysm movie "Greenland" with Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin, which I highly recommend. (I don't use the term "apocalypse" in that respect because it doesn't actually mean a cataclysmic event, but an unveiling or a revelation.)

What nobody mentions, becauee it's not quite relevant to the film, is the agony and the injuries that having your hair pulled with that kind of force induces. It puts one in mind of scalping, as Tom Cruise's character of Nathan Algren in "The Last Samurai" describes it, only dialed up a hundredfold.
