A little fact about this one..IRL, Mara Wilson’s mother was battling cancer during filming and unfortunately passed away. They asked Mara if she wanted to continue with the movie and she decided to keep filming to honor her mom. While Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman played horrible parents in the film, they became very close with her in real life and she was able to lean on them for support. I think this was also one of the last movies she was in.

"This is a horror film right now!" Yeah, the whole scene in the Trunchbull's house scared the ever-living f*** out of me when I was a kid. "Yo, she's superhuman!" That kinda supports what I said before, that I think the movie is really trying to play up the child's perspective in an unreliable narrator kind of way. Not that all the adults in her life (except one) aren't horrifically abusive, but the Trunchbull being superhuman is definitely how a big, strong, terrifying adult would seem to a child, especially if you add the whole Olympics thing to it. To a small child, an Olympic athlete WOULD seem superhuman. And the "I'm smart, you're dumb. I'm big, you're little. I'm right, you're wrong, and there's nothing you can do about it" bit that we get from two different adults is probably what it sounds like to any kid when adults say no without explaining why, or use the "because I said so" explanation.

Another big difference from the book: at the end of the book, Matilda actually does lose her abilities. As it turned out, she was only able to do so because she wasn't being academically challenged in Miss Honeys class, so her brain had to make up for it somehow. But that all stopped once she was transferred to a higher, more appropriate grade, because now for the first time in her life, she's actually struggling, instead of having her smarts go to waste.

Miss Honeys house is very different from the book. The main difference being that there is literally nothing in there besides a small camping stove, and two wooden boxes. Matilda didn't decide to help her just to get justice for Miss Honeys father. She also did it because Miss Honey needed serious help. There's a whole bit that mentions that the Trunchbull told her that now that she's an adult, she has to start paying her back for everything she did for her. The only money she had was a pound a week. The Trunchbull made her sign a paper that would redirect all of her paycheck directly into her bank.

I love how even though Matilda has some dark themes, it still manages to keep the humor. It knew when to take itself seriously (like with some of the scenes between Miss Trunchbull and Miss Honey), but also when to have fun (like with the powers montage scene).

Well, you've watched this, and clearly Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so how about some other movies from books by Roald Dahl? 😊 The Witches is of course out in a remake right now, but I'd strongly suggest the 1990 original. BFG and The Fantastic Mr. Fox are also good options. I saw an interview where he said that Danny, the Champion of the World, was the only movie adaptation of one of his books that he was happy with. Of course that sais nothing about movies made after his death in 1990. Unlike the others, that's a fairly realistic story without any supernatural elements. Roald Dahl has also been a screenwriter for Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang, and for the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice.

I swear this is a little known film but A Little Princess (1995) shares commonalities with Matilda. I believe it deviates a little from its novel counterpart, but it’s still a fun family film imo. [Edit: completely forgot Annie (1982) as well. It’s a bop & has the ever-comedic Carol Burnett & Tim Curry as the villains]

It's my cousin's favorite movie. When she showed us for the first time, I was a little mad because in french Miss Trunchbull's name is translate " Miss Legourdin " and my name is " Agathe Gourdin ". Of course, the fact Matilda learns to read alone is a miracle but the french writter Marcel Pagnol knew how to read at 3 years old because his mother let him in his father's class while she goes to the market. I don't know if you're aware but the guy on the paint is Roald Dahl. If you think " Matilda " is dark you should see " James and the giant peach " who's an adaptation of another Roald Dahl's book.

My parents were always pretty lenient when it came to what movies we watched as kids. I remember going to see this in the theater. My mom thought it was too dark/depressing. I could watch most PG-13 movies at this age (I think I was 5) but Matilda was too dark. When I got older (an actual teenager) my mother still refused to buy it for me. I had to buy it myself. 😆

25:19- It's infuriating how you reactors have the attention span of a goldfish when it comes to paying attention to detail. Miss Honey literally told Matilda that Trunchbull's fear is superstition. Hence, the black cat from earlier so Matilda did that with her telekinesis to make Trunchbull believe that she's being haunted.
