actually, when you think about it, Cricky was pretty lucky at the beginning with the match maker. think about it: if he didn't interrupt, Mulan would have already been matched with some farmer. but because of her own mistakes and trying to honor her family, she took her father's place in the army and meet Shang and though they don't hook up until the sequel (hit and miss kind of movie if you ask me) it is kind of cool she got to know Shang than just put into a emotionless marriage for the family. crickets are good luck, even if it don't look like it.

"A girl worth fighting for" is the last song in the movie because immediately after it stops, they reach the destroyed village, which turns out to be the village of the little girl who owned the doll. The message couldn't be any louder: that little girl is the real girl worth fighting for.

During the sequence when Mulan gets ready to take her father's armor and disguise herself as a man, you can see dragon imagery throughout the entire thing, to symbolize the great dragon that watches over the family. Conclusion: Mushu was unable to awaken the Great Dragon because it had already left, signifying that Mulan is the Great Dragon that protects her family.

Yeah, its sublte, but if you consider the imagery and the fact that she was sitting by the stone dragon when she made the decision, you can take from this the idea that the great stone dragon is within her now giving her that strength.

Fa Ping, the name Mulan chooses as a man, is also a pun, it means 'Flower Vase' but is a Chinese colloquialism for 'eye candy' when directed at women, who look pretty but fragile. Which is actually quite clever; because often her father puts a flower or a flowery comb in her hair, but at the same time Mulan proves herself not fragile, in addition flowers are a common theme in the film, mainly the quote of the flower blooming in adversity.

This will always be my top Disney movie and disney heroine ever. As a tomboy who really did not get the girly girl stuff, I really loved Mulan. It felt like there was finally a disney female hero that I could look up to and relate with. And seriously, grandma and the Emperor are awesome. xD

Uh-huh, this was one of my childhood favorites growing up! Looking at it now, I also love that she's both, she's a strong warrior and a beautiful woman and shows you can be both. I used the think girly stuff was silly, but now I can enjoy it if I want because there's nothing wrong with that side either. And the grandma and emperor are iconic! :D

One of the things i love about this film was how it dealt with sex/gender in the cultural sense For example the Chinese culture of women not being soldiers, and being brides was the way women were expected to bring honor to their families Whereas Mulan's love for her father made her take his place to protect him and that challenges the cultural notions of women not being fighters too As well the scene with Mushu telling Mulan how to act like a man, and it’s totally screwing her up because Mushu is going off a specific idea of masculinity even the song, I’ll make a man out of you, is about setting a specific type of masculinity and yet in the end, it’s the soldiers dressing as women to throw off and get close to the huns that win the day the men have to not only take cues from a girl, but they have to throw off that idea of masculinity to save the day. Quite a well written film.

you said it all !! but there's one thing in addition. it's not obviously told in the film but Shang has to have liked Mulan for a while before finding out she was a woman. because right after that, they come back to the homeland and Shang is at the point to propose to Mulan there. so this might be a sign for us to interpret him as a "bisexual" because he has a possibility that he liked Ping too. not only that, as you said, despite the film being made in 1998 back when none of the modern social topics were handled so harshly, sex/gender subjects were portrayed so perfectly. shang liking mulan when she was a man, mulan being educated to be an appropriate bride during her whole life and having no training and war experience from the past and yet being greater than all of the soldiers at fighting and there being "make a man out of you" song in the background which is gonna be played at the scene Mulan's mysogynistic male friends dress up as ladies lol. i also love how the film doesn't have any anxiety about giving social message but making a clearly realistic representation, for example male and female bodies or brains might work differently as a result of biological conditions; so Mulan is not naturally and necessarily physically super strong, but when she starts trying so hard then she becomes better than everyone. but for example, while Shang is fighting with the leader of Huns, Mulan knows that she can't beat him so runs. also in the film, her mind works a little more different from her male friends so she can find more practical solutions like creating an avalanche considered that they have no chance in front of hundreds of huns and climbing to stick which nobody could climb, or saving the emperor by climbing to the building. of course im not saying male and females are sooo different than each other, but at that time, women were showing more development at thinking and finding solutions while men were expected to only fight and develope their physical strengths. this film is my absolute favourite of all disney movies.

You know, what we need from Disney, if they ever get around to it or even think about it, is a Mulan prequel movie centered on the Emperor before he became the Emperor of China, because clearly he has shown to be immensely wise beyond his years. Maybe he started out like that as a kid and carried it all through adulthood. And, I'd also like a prequel Disney+ series for Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po on how they met and before they met Mulan and Shang. And last but not least, a prequel series for Fa Zhou because I would love to see how he was as a young man and having fought the war once, maybe a little time of him meeting Mulan's mother and falling in love, and the birth of their daughter at the end, seeing how all his decisions and actions would greatly influence his daughter's life and decisions. Not saying to build a Mulan cinematic universe, but it would definitely flesh out that world more and we'd all love it all the more.

Mulan is easily in my Top 5 Disney animated movies ever! This was really inspiring to me as a kid. It always gives me chills. I could watch this a million times and not get sick of it. I also kept wondering if you recognized the Emperor's voice actor, and I'm sure you were already told who voices him (aka Mr. Miyagi). He threw down some good lines in this one haha!

You know, I always thought that the cricket was not lucky and I guess he isn’t because near the end of the movie, he admits it but if you think about it, he kind of is lucky if he didn’t mess up what happened in the matchmakers, she might not have been home to see the Emperor’s advisor sending everyone to war. Mushu is definitely one of the best parts of this film - he makes me really wanna see reactions for Mulan 2, the Wish Dragon, & Raya and the Last Dragon (Shan Yu's sword also reminds me of Raya's sword). Mushu also reminds me of Dojo from Xiaolin Showdown tbh lol

I love this movie. Truly adore it. The soundtrack is amazing, I always want to defeat the huns every time someone tells me to get down to business. I just learned a few months ago that Ming-Na Wen was actually the actress who voiced Mulan and Mr. Miyagi, the Great Mr. Pat Morita, voiced the Emperor. Also, Eddie Murphy only accepted to be in a Disney Movie when he saw how good Aladdin had been for Robin Williams

Oh my god I feel so old because I had 5 years old when this movie came out. It was one of the first I saw on cinéma too. If you liked the movie, I have some facts who will make you appreciate it even more. First : normally Mulan didn't need to cut her hair because all warriors have long hair but, in asian culture, cuting your hair means that you left your old life behind you. Second : the two ancestors who look like farmers (the one who says the family will loose the farm) are an easter egg of a painting in Louvre museum. Third : you probably notice Shan Yu isn't shocked to see Mulan is a woman aren't you ? Well, it's because in his country, women can be soldiers. If you want others old Disney movies, you should watch " The Rescuers " and its sequel, " The Aristocats " or " Alice in Wonderland "

It's a funny thing about translations. I mean, I've gotten the real meaning of the 'your worst nightmare' joke only after I had a chance to watch the original English version. When I was a kid, I watched it in Russian, and it was translated as 'the dragon in a coat' (a reference to the Russian saying 'a horse in a coat', which is a half-rude reply to the questions 'Who?'). It's also due to rhyming... Holy TARDIS, those things are crazy!
