On the one hand, it's mostly due to the director Danny DeVito in this case, as the composer had to receive a rough cut of the finished film in order to do his work -- so DeVito was the one who set up a lot of the tension. On the other hand, they are two sides of the same coin. One can't work without the other.

OMG when Matilda and Miss Honey desperately try to hide from the Trunchbull never fails to give me anxiety! It’s like predator stalking its prey! This scene wasn’t in the book but I’m so glad Danny DeVito added it to the story. It was very clever - and very intense! Such a terrifying, suspenseful scene! Much scarier than any horror film! 😧
