I think high detail might be tough, but with a few tricks you could get closer. For one, the plane has ~30000 faces. Making each model have fewer faces would help the speed. So, you could use high-resolution textures but fewer faces in the actual models. I think this would help keep the speed (although you're not going to match C or even Java).
