when you will drag a variable block then, it has one input port(where would you connect that), that's why you need a constant block with value one to validate the variable block.

Why the use of constants before the variables a and b?

In the older versions of Matlab the block "Variable Input" is called "Slider Gain", so you are multiplying that input (constant = 1) with a gain (a or b). If the block has an input you need to connect with something, if you connect with 1 (constant) the gain (a or b) will be 1*a = a or 1*b = b.

Its basically a slider gain, so you can add the slider gain from math operations and change the name
