I'm in a rut. I recently received my marching baritone and it's much different than the concert euphonium I use to play. I sound absolutely atrocious, is there any way I can develop a proper baritone sound coming from a euphonium? thank you

Hey buddy, I get to play bari pretty often myself and it is quite different to euph. I will try to get a baritone and make a comparison vid explaining what are the differences and how to approach playing. Thanks for watching and commenting!

make a video how to develop embouchure
@TheZeldalink098 жыл бұрын
I'm a long-time alto sax player that picked up the euphonium for the first time about 2 months ago. I practice for at least an hour every single day and I've made tons of progress. I can sight-read quite well, easily hit partials and have pretty decent range. My only real problem is I just can't seem to get really good tone. I've tried everything. Loosening my embouchure, using tons of air, etc but there is always this noticeable buzzing sound. What could I be doing wrong? Any tips or ideas would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!
@Matonizz8 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy! Thanks for watching and a great question! Usually when I hear someone with a brassy/buzzy sound it is the case of a player having very little space in between the lips to run or the embouchure stretched too much like a smile rather than a kiss. Couple of key points in order to make a stereotypical singing euph sound: 1. Air is much slower than any brass instrument or woodwind, think of blowing warm airwave! 2. Lips are VERY relaxed but firm at the same time. Think of a relaxed rounded shape as if you were forming kiss. 3. Minimal pressure on UPPER LIP. Bit of pressure on bottom is ok, pressure on top is a no go. 4. Tons of air will make you sound louder not prettier. Correct air speed will get the pitch and tone quality. 5. Open up the gap between your lips. Think of opening the teeth when you play instead. 6. Don't tuck bottom lip under the upper, try to keep them in a straight line. 7. Keep a lot of space in back of your mouth. I know it's a lot of factors to consider but that is usually the reason why developing good tone take a little bit of time. It's hard for me to say what is exactly going on without seeing you play but if you experiment with all the factors I mentioned you're on the right path. Consistent practice is the key! Hope it helps! Best of luck on your journey! Algirdas

The sound is the result of a very simple addition: air + vibration = sound. If you played the right note your embochure worked good, You need to change the sound quality with a different inspiration tecnique or position of the tongue. They are a lot, difficult to explane in a post ... sorry!

Your videos are fantastic, which one should I start with. I was a Tuba player in High School and at the age of 54 I got a Baritone from that high school when they were getting rid of their band equipment. Sadly my Sousaphone was gone. Do you have a slowed down video for learning scales I've got the Bb scale but I'm very slow. and my pitch changes without warning. So which of your video is the most basic. They're all very good.

Hi Algirdas, thanks for the great video, I was just wondering what your opinion was on whether your tone quality is affected by your instrument/its age? I have a second hand quite old besson sovereign and I don't whether it's my playing but it doesn't sound as good as newer instruments around me in my brass band. Do you think cleaning the instrument will help the tone?
@Matonizz7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, cleaning might help, although it usually mainly affects the intonation more than anything. This has been Besson issue for many years now - inconsistency from horn to horn. Good Besson is great, okay Besson is not so. It would be hard for me to tell you whether it has something to do with your instrument without actually me having to play it myself but if you hear a better quality on newer instruments I believe it's pretty safe to assume that there is some issue with your sovereign. Hopefully this answers the question my friend!

Make sure you are breathing with your diaphragm (ie. when you breathe your stomach should NOT cave-in but rather expand out a bit). Then make sure your teeth are far apart - lips are kinda-tight in the corners and kinda-loose in the middle - and the mouthpiece is just resting, not pressed, against your face.

Hi ! Belgian player here :) I have a question : I have headaches after 1 or 2 hours of playing, that increases often after i play in high range. What can i do ? what's the issue ? any ideas ?
@Matonizz7 жыл бұрын
Hi buddy! That sounds like something you shouldn't ignore my friend. Go to doctor like yesterday! It's either you have a very high blood pressure or another scenario I'm aware of that causes headaches would be direct skin contact with brass. If you're instrument is not fully lacquered or plated, same goes with mouthpiece and you keep on having contact with it every day it is poisonous for your body. Go get check out mate, doesn't sound like something you should ignore! Best of luck and take care of yourself brother!
@IXSNAKE30XI7 жыл бұрын
it could be that you are too tense when you when you play higher. Sometimes when i get to double B or C above the staff i get too tense and i get headaches, if that is the problem then you just have to relax when playing higher. Notice how relaxed you are when you play concert F then notice how relaxed/tensed you are when you play higher
@sabbatanieros6 жыл бұрын
You coud try to blow slow air specially in the hig range with the lips distanced. For me is the best way to play soft in the hig range and with this tecnique I can play very longue time in that range.

Thanks for the video👍. I play euphonium and I was wondering if dropping the Adam's apple will greatly improve tone. I may be a high schooler, but I am very interested in learning more about what makes a true Euphonist and even become one myself🙏
@John_Chow3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron, I'm not a professional, but I have some experience playing euphonium with some youth ensembles in Georgia. Dropping your Adam's apple will most likely improve your tone because it opens up your air column, allowing for more relaxed, deep, and efficient breathing. Also, experiment with opening different parts of your oral cavity such as your palate, and see if manipulating your nasal cavity has any effect. Opening/closing the jaw and raising/lowering the tongue will absolutely affect tone quality. The goal is to achieve an air column that has a width and velocity that "fits" nicely inside the horn. Experiment regularly to find what works for you, your mouthpiece, and your horn. Once you get the sound you want, develop and maintain consistency through daily long tones. Hope this helps. Cheers, John Chow

I just ordered a new euphonium (I've been playing trombone for a year, and trumpet for a few months), and am looking forward to learning this instrument. One thing I've suspected is that when playing any instrument, it's difficult to hear it the way an audience would, or at least the way someone on the other side of the bell would hear it. Is this somewhat of a stumbling block?
