I would say one of the biggest advice for people seeking their first engineering job is to always provide a tailored cover letter for the specific position you're applying for in addition to your resume. I know for a fact that some firms don't even look at the resume until after they've gone through an initial screening process of reading a cover letter. Firms want to know WHY you want to work for them first and then determine if you're qualified to work them. Also, always list the computer software you are familiar with. Even if its just Microsoft office.

The guy has a 3.7 GPA, and just because his resume doesn't impress the recruiter, the recruiter throws his resume away. That's total disrespect to the poor student who spends the days and nights to study and yet a guy disregard all his/her hard work because of a piece of paper. That's why companies are becoming more like a robot.

Hey Matt, First off thank you for posting this video. This is the second time around of me watching. I am following your advice as we speak. One thing I just noticed that stuck out to me on the very first resume is that more than likely the person who wrote it, English is not their first language, and they are probably are not an American citizen. You can see this is obvious in two spots on the resume. The first being under the category "Languages" and the second where they put Los Angeles, United States". So the person who wrote the resume is probably not a moron, but at a disadvantage due to a language barrier.

@MatPicardal5 жыл бұрын
I'd make it really clear on your cover letter and maybe even resume that you are really serious about moving to that state and their firm/company. Often times, if it's a small/medium firm, it's riskier to interview people out of state because they may not be as serious as someone who is already living there. You don't want them to assume that you are just resume spamming companies.

Thank you a lot for your videos, Mat! You rock! I have one more question for you. While writing my cover letters I always face doubts referent to where and to who address the letters. The job postings specify the roles and requirements all candidates must possess, but rarely mention where and who to address the letters. I always enter their website and check the address of the closest office to the job position location. Is this the correct way to proceed?

Hi Mat, I’m a sophomore student in a Community College trying to become a civil/structural. I took almost all of the class at this level except circuits. I have done a structural engineering “internship” thanks to my aunt in SOCAL TOOO!!But in there I was mostly doing AutoCad draftings, structural observations, some simple beam calcs(THE SIMPLEST BEAM CALCULATIONS along with footings and shear walls, how to print the blue prints, updated the companies code and familiarized myself with structural components of buildings. Is that enough to get me into an actual internship without any help from family? Just like you, I too have a not so competitive grade(3.211). Also, since I’m just a community college, is it ok if I add my president position for a club ( Environmental Club). Your videos are a gift to us btw!! Ty.
@MatPicardal5 жыл бұрын
That's great Francis! That's basically an internship, I think it's just a matter of you communicating it well on your resume. The tasks you've mentioned are pretty common tasks for interns, so it definitely relates. The president position is also good even though it's environmental, emphasize your leadership skills that you developed in that one.

Hi Prateek, there's always a chance, but what are you going to do to stand out from the thousands of people that are applying to these firms? "Asking" for a job is not enough, how are you going to add value to a firm and how are you going to communicate that to a firm so they take notice.

Hi Mat, thank you for sharing your valuable experience with us. Just a few things......we often quantify and explain in brief to justify the skills we claim in our cover letter. So, should we go with the same approach to write a resume or put the bullet points only? Is it non-professional to put summary/objective at the top? Thanks Hasan Sydney, Australia
@MatPicardal5 жыл бұрын
I'd put your "why" on your cover letter, and it doesn't necessarily need to be bullet pointed on it also because it is a letter. If your resume is good, a good cover letter can make your application better, but not really the other way around. Resume is always more important. I personally like a short summary/objective at the top of the resume showing what position you're after (intern, entry, etc.), but I know not everyone agrees.
