A few important notes: 1. Both builds were compiled using the default settings without any custom optimizations. The only exception is that UE 5.4 build has a custom UI for graphics settings and DLSS support. Both builds are using Hardware Lumen as well. 2. CPU performance is the biggest improvement in UE 5.4. In my case it's not just "15 more FPS", but rather an impressive up to 40% CPU performance boost depending on a scene, which is a lot and very welcome. 3. GPU performance is also improved, but to be fare, measuring GPU performance difference is not 1:1 accurate because UE 5.4 has a lot of new features and the existing ones were also improved. For example, UE 5.0 build does not have a proper support for Virtual Shadow Maps, it does not support the "Hit Lighting" feature for Hardware Lumen (UE 5.4 feature only) and the overall quality of Lumen GI is worse in UE 5.0. However, even with new features enabled, UE 5.4 still runs faster than UE 5.0 (up to 20% better GPU performance). 4. Shader compilation: - UE 5.0 build does not have any shader pre-compilation steps, it compiles shaders during gameplay and the demo will stutter like crazy for the first ~10 minutes. - UE 5.4 build handles shader compilation very differently: it does have a short shader pre-compilation step, which compile only a small portion of shaders, while the rest of the shaders are compiled during gameplay using different method: it doesn't compile them all the time until all shaders were compiled, but rather compile them in chunks when traversing through the game world, which helps to avoid shader compilation stutter, but it will drop the framerate for a few seconds (depending on how fast your CPU is) when you reach a certain points in the game world. - The new shader compilation method is supported in Unreal Engine 5.3 and above, but the developers also have an option to implement a classic shader pre-compilation process, where all shaders are compiled before gameplay.

The v5.4 is much better than the Vanilla version but the fact that the UE5 performance is still an issue 4 years later is ridiculous! And even the upcoming v5.5 still has traversal stutters etc. Epic should really focus on the engine performance first and foremost.

its a shame that with 4080 we cant even play it at 60 fps 1080p....i wish rdna 4, battlemage and blackwell gives us this ability at cheap price

@@bmqww223 1080p@60fps? The PS5 was able to run the first Demo of UE5 at 1440p@30fps, so a 4080S should definitely be running that Matrix Demo at 4K@60fps! UE5 is truly unoptimized.

@@bmqww223 Epic confirmed that the Demo was running at Native 1440p@30fps. It was developed for the PS5 as a Tech Demo.

Important note to everyone reading this comment: This is running at Cinematics quality level, which is never used in game since it's for engine renders, that's why it is hidden from the settings in all UE5 games. So the performances are really worst than it shoud be. An RTX 4090 could almost run this at native 4K60FPS with Ray Tracing I think but still with some stuttering when streaming objects, but only with Epic settings, not Cinematics. For comparison: PS5 runs at 4K60FPS at high settings with TSR at 50%.

Hi! First of all, thank you for using my project; I'm happy to see that it's getting some visibility! :) Secondly, I’m not sure the comparison was entirely fair. You used the Cinematic graphics preset for UE5.4, but unless you manually set that same preset in the 5.0 version, you were comparing the Epic preset in 5.0 to the Cinematic preset in 5.4. The Cinematic preset is intended for in-engine renders or cinematics, which severely impacts performance and isn’t typically used for real-time gameplay, that’s why most games don’t include this preset in their graphics settings. So it’s not representative of the real performances of Unreal Engine 5 games. I included it in the menu because I wanted to expose all options, but in this case, the Epic preset would have been more appropriate-unless, of course, you manually set Cinematic preset in the 5.0 version as well, like I mentioned. If I remember correctly, at 1440p with DLSS Quality and Lumen HWRT, I was getting around 45-50 FPS with my RTX 4070 Super + Ryzen 7 5800X, so you should get way more than that with your PC. Thirdly, to respond to those comparing these performance results with the PS5 and suggesting Unreal isn’t optimized for PC: the PS5 runs at high settings without HWRT Lumen. Here, however, the game is running at Cinematic settings with HWRT. To recap: High settings = 4K60FPS on console with TSR at 50%, Epic settings = 4K60FPS on a desktop PC with TSR at 50%, both without HWRT Lumen. You need a pretty high-end PC to run HWRT Lumen with decent performances on the CitySample (even tho the performances of Hardware Ray Tracing have really been improved since 5.0, and even more in Unreal Engine 5.5) Finally, I need to update it because it’s a little outdated. It doesn’t use the latest version of my menu, and it’s running on Unreal Engine 5.4.1, if I remember correctly. We now have Unreal Engine 5.4.4, and the plugins are a little bit outdated too (like the DLSS plugin that is the first 3.7 version, not 3.7.20, since I packaged it in June)-there are new versions of each plugin, and the FSR 3.1 plugin has been released for Unreal Engine 5.4. But I need to find where I put the project files in order to update it XD. PS: The Google Drive link is down (too many downloads), I will send a new link when I come back home :)

​@MxBenchmarkPC Oh nice, that is what I thought too, but I still prefered to warn you, just in case 😅 But I do think that it would have been even more interesting to compate the Epic settings, the performances differences would have been even more impressive, or... epic 😂 (ok I'm out) And the little problem is that peoples think this is the real UE5 performances, when in reality it is not, since no one play with cinematic quality, but with high to epic quality. Can't wait to experience the stutter from all the AAA companies that switched to UE5. The only thing UE does is provide cheap and Expendable labour for big companies.

@@anshukandulna1844 I don't experience stutters in UE5 games so far, but our current hardware barely can get up to 100 fps and struggles to keep 60 fps when maxed out on a high end pc. Its probably the worst time to upgrade, but everyones PC is getting outdated from their last upgrade like right now and we are all forced to do it. I think even the next RTX series is going to struggle under this engine. I just hope GTA 6 is going to run fine at least with rage engine with our current hardware then we have atleast a bulletproof AAA game for the next few years

It's crazy cuz you could get the easiest UE5 game to run on any system and it will still stutter. Epic hasn't figured it out yet, truly a disgrace

@@nemesisrtx just use vsync n gsync combined n in nvcp cap your fps 3 below ur monitor refresh rate n ingame use a 60fps cap simple. Never had a ue5 stutter unless the game is broken

And don't count on any UE 5 releases being on 5.4 or newer soon. STALKER 2 is running on UE 5.1.1, SH 2 Remake UE 5.1.1.0, Black Myth Wukong UE 5.0, Robocop Rouge City UE 5.2.0.0. So I'd expect it's going to be a while before we start seeing UE 5 games released built using 5.4 or newer.

The next 5 years of gaming is going to be pretty bleak performance wise, but at least that floaty looks of rasterised objects is gone and everything doesn't have a weird white rim any more 👍

Not at all. It's just that with UE5, Epic didn't aim for where the hardware currently is, but where it will be by the time first triple A UE5 games start releasing. For example Fortnite is UE5 game and it runs super smoothly even on a potato. Wukong also ran relatively fine. UE5 just gives developers lots of tools and choice, but developers themselves still need to choose whether they prioritize truly next gen graphics or smoother performance.

​@@LudvikKoutnyArtalso not really true. It's more that they've bit off a lot to chew this generation. Nanite, Virtual Shadow Maps, and Lumen have issues while still being very costly. At least while path tracing is expensive, it's at least a lot more accurate on average too. Sure it's still impressive but I'd rather have the real Ray Tracing effects

@@LudvikKoutnyArtbut both Wukong and d Fortnite don’t run fine lol. Fortnite still has shader stutter and Wukong has significant traversal stutter which constantly breaks immersion when moving past certain points in the game. I play on a 4090 btw so the hardware doesn’t matter.

The day this runs at 60fps native 4K HDR will be the day UE5 games will be playable with all features enabled, on consumer hardware. based on this, we are 4-5 years away from that, as it looks like nGreedia are slowing down performance increases for consumers, and I do not count 90 series cards as consumer cards. This might happen sooner if Epic target one of their point releases as an optimisation release, and spend 4 months just on that task.

I mean, ive played UE5 games in native 4k HDR that was 100% stable and pushing 70-100fps with my 4090. This is an old tech demo and I think a bunch of studios just dont understand how to efficiently optimize UE and thats the real reason they come out with issues. Played a few that were flawless.

GTA 6 is going to look amazing due to its art style, just like RDR2 did. Achieving these graphics would likely require something as powerful as the 6090, since this is a cinematic demo without action or ragdolls enabled. Even in this state, it can’t hit 60fps. If you enable ragdolls and throw in some gunfights, it would probably run at 5 fps on a 4090. If she were using an RPG to blow up multiple cars, I’m sure the game would crash because it’s not optimized for high-action gameplay. This demo is mainly to showcase the visuals. GTA6 will be designed for high-action gameplay.

GTA 6 will be released on PS5 where the video card is similar to RTX 2070 Super, this is at 30 frames, so even on RTX 4070 you can play calmly at 60 frames, and for 4K without DLSS and at ultra settings, RTX 4080 will do, because the game will not have very realistic graphics due to the weak PS5, it can be slightly tightened for the PC release, which is not significant, do not rave about 6090

@@4alex_frash4 What are you talking about? I said if GTA6 had this same type of ultra realistic graphics, it would have required 6090. I was talking about hypothetical scenario. But we know that GTA6 won't be having this much realistic graphics, they will focus on art style to make it look good. That's why 4080 will be able to run it easily. But considering it releases in 2026, it will definitely require 5080 for 4k 60fps. If they add path tracing, you will have to need 5090 for 4k 60.

DLSS Ray Reconstruction wasn't implemented in this one, it's just a placeholder.

next 5 years we get Unreal Engine 5.8-6.0 and on RTX 7090 it will run in native 1440P on 45-60FPS... UE is clearly shit for gaming. Either a game has been created on it that looks nice, but has high demands, or it runs smoothly even at 100FPS in native resolution, but looks like a game from 2015. Unreal Engine 5 should never have come to the gaming scene... The engine is always stuttering. Nvidia Shadowplay has a forever problem with it that it stops uploading. And above all, the engine is dependent on DLSS 2+3 even on the 4080 to get a reasonable FPS even in 1440P, which is simply unacceptable. This can make the game look more realistic, but if it doesn't run at 1440P or all the way to 1080P at 60-80FPS without DLSS and FSR on the latest and expensive graphics that are built for 4K, then that's just wrong. I've been playing for more than 15 years and I just haven't been captivated by the Unreal Engine... When I started Crysis 3 on a Pentium G2020 and GTX 650 in 2013, I was more than done with the graphics and even years later and still today I'm surprised by how the game looks.

UE5 was probably meant first and foremost as a cinematography and CGI tool. Consumer hardware was NOWHERE close to even keeping up with the tech for realtime gaming yet, but it's great that someone did it. If you check all the recent machine learning developments, chances are you won't even need to render half of the graphics through a regular pipeline

i never seen a good optimized games use Unrealengine in my focking life lol. Rage engine from R* are best, optimized, graphics like drawdistance, shadow, water, reflection, clouds, snow and awe some ragdoll physics.... Rage is the best engine.

It does support HDR as far as I can tell, but I can't check it as I don't have an HDR capable monitor.

Idk why, but even this 5,4 build have worse cpu performance than this: watch?v=E-KFjYu637k&t=179s this build (on 5.1 preview) is slightly optimized by Xenthorx (dl is there in the pinned comment) and on 10700f and 3080 at 1440p im getting 55-80 fps with dlss. So cpu performance is way better there. And yes, there's hardware lumen. Idk what changes he did there (i asked him, and he dont remember correctly).

The video shows how badly optimized the Unreal Engine is, they have patched it broken. This is what happens when you put everything into your engine without optimizing it, it will probably take years until they have fixed all the bugs. By then many Unreal Engine users will have switched to other engines.

Unfortunately, Matrix Awakens is an example of very bad code and materials workflow. If this demo was made by professionals, it would work at 60 fps on RTX2060

I'd like to know of any UE 5 game that runs at a locked 60 FPS with a steady frametime (no hitching). Only one I've played that didn't have some sort of stutter problem has been Hellblade 2. And part of that is probably because the game is pretty slow paced in general. SH 2 Remake still has traversal stuttering, STALKER 2 has it even worse (was one of my biggest worries for that game when it was announced it would be UE) etc. Yet games like Alan Wake 2 which I re-installed recently to play the latest DLC (the lake house) looks amazing and runs smooth as silk. But that's using Remedy's own in house engine (Northlight). Also don't have the stuttering issues with other games that don't use UE. Like RE Engine games, games that use the Decima engine etc. Or Rockstars RAGE engine.

bro your cpu is getting old I think you should upgrade it for more accurate gpu tests I think new AM5 ryzen 5 cpus are great with overclock ryzen 5 7500f or 7600 just overclock them to something like 5.4 ghz and they are performing very similar to non 3D ryzen 9 cpus in gaming if you keep them stable with 5.4 ghz clock speed

And the latest releases coming out on UE 5 like STALKER 2 are using UE 5 version 5.1.1. It's going to be a while before games start releasing that were made with UE 5.4 or newer.

This is running at Cinematic quality level, which is never used in games since it's for engine renders, that's why it is hidden from the settings in all UE5 games. So the performances are really worst than it shoud be. An RTX 4090 could almost, if not already, run this at native 4K60FPS with Ray Tracing, but only with Epic settings, not Cinematic... so we won't have to wait 4-5 years to play this at native 4K60FPS, unless you want to play with cinematic quality preset... For comparison: PS5 runs at 4K60FPS at high settings with TSR at 50%. I think a 4080 can already run this at native 4K60FPS at High-Epic settings with Ray Tracing.
