Who was Marie de France, really? What did she do? And why do people still talk about her 800 years later. At first I didn't like Matrix by Lauren Groff but a second read changed all that. And here's why...

Ann, thank you for talking about the real Marie de France. I took notes and was glad. (Didn’t have to take time to research myself.) I felt distant and sometimes confused reading Matrix. Groff is a talented, poetic, funny writer. However, I thought the real Marie de France deserved something more, but it is an unusual style of historical fiction that LG explains in her interviews. She said readers know she was born in 1978 and of course modern feminist ideas as well as historic perspectives would be part of the story. This was first book I read of hers. I am considering reading “Fates and Furies” now that I understand her style better.

I didn’t know anything about Marie but I did like the book a lot. Interesting how much is known about her, and the time period context you provide. Thanks a lot!

This was great--I will add it to my list! I'm interested in stories about convents and abbeys: I have Sylvia Townsend Warner's "The Corner that Held Them" on my shelf too. Thank you!

The German readers in our group didn't like it at all, but then we started talking about the book, and they all planned a reread. 🙂
