This is the Breakdown: REAL or FAKE? Realism vs Entertainment! We'll give it a rating based on TWO criteria: how realistic we think the fight scene or martial arts are, and how entertaining it is since we know that the main objective of the movie isn't a "real" depiction but instead to provide a good show! Things like jump cables and other dramatizations won't be considered as part of the "real" factor!

Blocking kicks with the arms isn't real, but remember, this isn't real either, Morpheus knows this and can use the ability of the matrix to stop him. Also, the way I saw it was, they were just having a bit of fun, play fighting. Morpheus wasn't even trying at this point.

Interesting observation! I don't remember the movie much myself, but I remember thinking at this point that Morpheus was also trying to train Neo to fill out his role as "the one". I totally get what you mean though, I mean it's in the Matrix! The purpose of this series is to just look at the martial arts themselves, but I think if it was just play fighting, the entire crew wouldn't be so excited to see it! I wonder if they genuinely thought Neo would just be some prodigy right away to help save them!

Depends in a lot of things, you actually can block a kick with the arms, but depends on how hard it comes, the distance, the stand, and very important, in here they are fighting barefoot

You are not analysing it as a fight in the matrix- but as if it was a real world fight- and I know that might be deliberate but you didnt point that out. Like saying morpheus couldnt slap down those kicks with just his palm. sure he can in the matrix- he is one of those who has best mastery of altering his reality in the matrix (aside from Neo ofcourse). He can jump between skyscapers- im damn sure he could make his blocks strong enough to block a kick. So your points are valid for if this was a real fight- but not for 1 in this film- inside the matrix.

pls never look for realistic in the matrix. Morpheus told that. So if you beleave you can jump 100 foot so you can, it's the same with blocking kicks with the hand.

Slow down the video , he isn’t blocking the shin when he blocks the kicks he’s blocking the top of his foot, that’s what’s unrealistic . If you were able to space and time it right that would work but only hitting the top of the foot simply is impossible . Your hands are tougher than the small bones in the top of your foot so theoretically it could work but you’d have to be superhuman to time shit like that

Yeah I suppose that's true! And honestly in a lot of actual scenarios people do end up blocking with just their hand or forearm - but I don't think its sustainable. But sometimes in a fight you just gotta do what you gotta do haha. Thanks for tuning in!

Well, if you think about it, he's actually kind of still learning. His body has not actually used the skills that he has apparently learned in ten hours of training or in ten hours of downloading ...as it were. It sort of makes sense that he would be a little stiffer and not as loose as he would be. If he was an experienced assassin, like john wick happens to be...

This whole thing was meant for spectacle rather than realism. They could have chosen a boxing match but it wouldn’t be nearly as cinematic. Still kick-ass fun at the movies.

I mean it's the Matrix and the lesson to be learned is that the laws of physics can be broken or bent. Personally I found all the different style presented very entertaining.

Yes the Ali shuffle mid fight to dodge and move - devastating! The shuffle just to show it off and then stop and not use it - that was for show haha

Nice reaction! Someone told me once that every time Neo incorporates himself after get beat by Morpheous he is actually changing styles, someone saw judo, karate, kung-fu and even drunken boxing in this fight. I always wanted to know how true is this? LOL

If I not mistaken he starts with Eagle stand (kung fu, also called "eagle claw" stand), and Morpheus got the prying mantis styles, also kung fu That at the very beggining of the match

I'm so glad I found this I've always wondered how good the moves were in this movie. I also got a laugh out of that last kick morpheous does and asks Neo 'how did I beat u?' My reaction has always been 'bc I wanted to show off and b cool at the end'
